The Tragedy of Krispy Kreme
Yahoo Finance News ^ | October 13, 2009 | Carol Kopp

Posted on 10/14/2009 8:48:23 AM PDT by ETL

Krispy Kreme had been a popular doughnut chain in the South since 1937, but remained unknown to the rest of us until about 1996. That's when the first Krispy Kreme popped up in New York City, on West 23rd Street. ..."

Krispy Kreme stock hit a high of about $49 in 2003. Then it started on a long downward spiral, losing about 90% of its value.

This company had problems that had nothing to do with its doughnut recipe.

It over-expanded and took on crushing debt. There were allegations of management misconduct. Some franchises went bankrupt. Competition was fierce in the cheap eats category. More people started consuming healthy foods.

In short, Krispy Kreme managed to lose money selling something that is both cheap and delicious.

You should try Poppy’s on 24HWY in Independence. They only take cash. They are soooo good! But I really love donuts. I’ll even eat the chocolate wax donuts in a bag.

Another of Winston-Salem’s spectacular flame-outs, buyouts or Management just plain didn’t like living in a “bucolic” town:

Piedmont Airlines
Wachovia
ATT
Nabisco
Dell
Sarah Lee cut backs

Take the Krispy Kreme Challenge

Haven't had one in years, but as others have pointed out, they have to be eaten hot. They're not made to sit on a shelf.

KK used to be the primary fundraising vehicle for the marching band in HS.

They bought cheap and sold dear.

Band members waited at the entrance to school and waved them still warm under the noses of everyone that walked in the door.

Once you go Krispy, you never go back.

And that’s all I have to say.

"I know people like their Krispy Kremes but they are almost 100% sugar. Yech."

I know. Never liked 'em.

“If you haven’t tried a Krispy Kreme with honey poured over the top and a heavy layer of sugar sprinkled on you just haven’t lived! (Whipped cream may be substituted for the honey)”

That sounds like going overboard! More power to you!

LOL! Kommunist Krematorium pro-abortion Obamadonuts!

I knew the address sounded familiar. They're only about 3 or 4 buildings away from each other, same side of the street. I'll bet the commies stop off there every morning for breakfast, have a Kommunist Krematorium pro-abortion Obamadonut and talk lovingly about their pal comrade in the White House.

Where I come from porn is what ya do with slop for the hogs, like, “Quit porn that slop on the ground, it goes in the troff!!”. Or, “Tell Luster no more beer, he’s porn it on hiss head instead of drinkin’ it”.

But say...That’s an idea..A cold one with a Krispy Kreme or three. Thanks mom! (ps, I’m available for adoption to anyone with a Krispy Kreme shop)

You just have to ask, “Would it be better without the toppings?”, If not, then pour’em on! (Long as there’s no extra charge, I mean)

Krespy was knocked out of the area in which I live. I miss them. And Dunkin’ Donuts seems to have gone far downhill.

Add a Nehi orange pop, plus some of the special cough syrup Luster sells in back of the drugstore, and it’s just right for breakfast.
