The sad and curious exile of the American mustache
Boston Globe ^ | October 11, 2009 | Wesley Morris

Posted on 10/10/2009 2:13:01 PM PDT by GQuagmire

...What happened? For the past 20 years, a parade of facial hair has taken root on the faces of movie stars and American men - sideburns, the three-day beard, the chinstrap, the soul patch. The goatee returned from the 19th century and seemingly brought eight cousins with it. But the mustache? As far as pop culture is concerned, the mustache remains trapped in the land of porn and irony.

No, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter, very famous prior to WWII.

As far as we know she was all woman, but slightly weird ,even by modern standards. In 1980 she became hisorically, retroactively redfined by feminists, Outspoken, and had some far out ideas. Her paintings are very intense.

She insisted on attending the opening of her first gallery display of assembled paintings in her personal , very wide, bed.

You betcha! My hubby has a full beard and mustache which he keeps neatly trimmed. But it looks good on him and actually I’ve never seen him clean-shaven except for pictures.

I can’t stand seeing these guys with a 3-day stubble or a scraggly goatee. If you can’t grow a REAL beard, give it up!

I probably feel this way because I’m older and remember when all the sexiest guys had mustaches (Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Ronald Coleman, William Powell, John Carroll) OK, so half of you never heard of those guys but trust me, they were HOT!

Ft. Gordon? That’s a 25mos.
From flag and torch in the civil war to signal satellites above...

I went through there in 1988 for a 31K MOS. A catchall field phone and FM radio Tactical MOS.

“I’ve had a mustache since highschool.. shaved it off twice.
Look really odd without it so..”

Know exactly what you mean. You look down and it looks like you’ve got nine miles of upper lip.

You look like 1970's - 1980's weatherman from WJZ in Baltimore, Bob Turk.

Cheers!

My dad has always had a full mustache. When I was a kid he shaved it off for some reason. We had to go to the store and I would not walk by him. His upper lip looked so big and naked. I was embarassed to walk with him and kept telling him to GET AWAY dad!

Thanks for the memory!

"I have one of those, but with mutton chops. I haven’t trimmed my ‘stache since december of last year, and if I don’t trim my chops about once a months."

You should head to Gettysburg to be a re-enactor...

I didn't know Burnside was at Gettysburg ;-)

I dunno maybe too many folks think of a ‘stache alone as a symbol of the ‘70s and to me at least, that didn't seem such a great time.

At some time in my late teens, for a very personal reason, it became my style to grow a full beard following more or less it's natural lines. In 35 years since I first wore it I have shaved my face maybe three times, always going back to full beard right away. In the beginning it was red but I don't have far to go now and it'll be Santa Claus white.

My wife wants me to color it because I'm looking for a job, but I consider hiding it, or my half bald head, an act of flim-flam. I wonder sometimes though, if there is anybody who actually respects us old farts, with our hard earned wear and tear, for what we bring to the table.

Certainly our Congress only views us as someone to try and scare. But I never bought their BS and I ain't about to start now.
