Yesterday, Emily Gillette filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vermont, setting the stage for a legal battle, according to the Burlington Free Press.
Three years ago, Gillette, her husband, Brad, and their then 22-month-old daughter, River, were ordered to leave a plane at Vermont's Burlington International Airport. It was a New York-bound Delta Connections flight operated by Freedom Airlines.
Gillette was nursing River when a flight attendant asked her to cover up. Gillette refused. The flight attendant asked again, offering a blanket. The then 27-year-old mother continued to refuse. The flight attendant "pointed to the exit and demanded: 'Just get off the plane,'" the court documents read.

Breastfeeding...at 8

Is there any other kind?
I agree but that does not mean breast feeding should necessarily stop.
target-rich environment: begin here — FAR PART 121.53X — an read on.
Point is repeatedly made AND augmented by carrier policies.
Net: passengers must comply.
Well - here’s the key sentence in the article as far as I’m concerned....
“Gillette told USA Today that she wasn’t exposing herself. She purposely sat in a window seat and she was holding down her shirt while nursing”
If she’s telling the truth - that she wasn’t exposed, then you’ve got a flight attendant who was out of line.
If she isn’t telling the truth - and she just “whipped it out” Then she needs to just get over it already.
TTIUW/OP
While the possibilities you offered are certainly possible - you left some out.
She could have been doing exactly what she said she was doing.
She claims she was not exposed - she’s sitting in her seat by the window where very few people can see her.
They make maternity clothes now where you don’t need a blanket -the shirts are specially designed where you can pull a flap open, let the baby latch on, while the rest is covered up.
It is possible the flight attendant was just being a b&tch.
Too bad they didn’t find anyone else that was there to offer up what they witnessed.
Did you click on the article and read it?
What exactly did she do that was disgusting?
Lik you said - you can breastfeed without being an exhibitionist, which is exactly what she said she was doing.
There are many people out there who are simply disgusted with the act itself. Even if the breast is covered they think it’s gross to see a baby being held to a woman’s chest.
There is a fine line here where I’m not sure who really has the problem - sometimes I think those that scream “I’M SO OFFENDED” are probably looking a little too closely and may be a few eggs short of a dozen.
YIKES! She needed at blanket AND a paper bag.
Man, that is like way wrong dude, breast feeding at 8 years old. I’m going to need therapy now ...
As I said in a previous thread, I know from experience that you cannot really cover up very well just using your blouse. I don’t care whether you are pulling up your blouse to nurse, or unbuttoning it, you are going to be showing some skin, and it is going to be obvious what you are doing. That is particularly true with an older baby who will get distracted by what is going on around it, take a break, pull away leaving the nipple exposed, then go back to nursing. THIS KID WAS NEARLY TWO, FOR PETE’S SAKE. All it requires is a light blanket, or a sweater, or something you can throw over yourself. This woman was offered a lightweight blanket but refused to use it. Why?
If it was making others in close proximity to her uncomfortable — it is a rather intimate act, after all — she should have had enough courtesy to do use the blanket.
Do I think it is disgusting? Of course not. I’ve breast fed six kids myself, including on planes and in other public places. If you are modest, hardly anyone realizes you are doing it. But I’ve encountered the exhibitionists often enough. They are getting off on upsetting some people, and feeling self-righteous at the same time.
“an expectation of some level of modesty...”
Our society seems to suffer from a lack courtesy. How about trying to give the mother and baby some privacy? How about Mama trying to be as discreet as possible? I realize babies require attention at inopportune times. I have no problem with Mama tending to those needs. Unfortunately, we have a whole groups of people who think that because you have a “right”, you are able to be as offensive or rude as you wish. I enjoy a bawdy joke. When I am out with the guys in the shop or on a boat fishing - it isn’t rude. Telling it at my wife’s meeting with the ladies of the church or loudly using the “F” word in a public place - it may be legal but I am certain it is rude behavior.-—JM
The article says she was wearing a tee shirt "pulled down" So was the kid's head under the shirt?? Doubtful. Anyway, I agree with Lurker this is probably bitch attendant vs moonbat passenger.
You are correct. It’s legal to own porno mags, but you don’t leave em out on the coffee table.
I think it’s great that you do that.
ok - I missed the part where it was a t-shirt.
It’s different to picture someone w/ a maternity top vs. a chick with one bare shoulder and breast hanging out.
I didn’t breastfeed a 2 yr. old, but I know if you try to put a blanket over a 2 yr. old the child will simply pull it off anyway.
“I think its great that you do that.”
That differs from the wifes opinion slightly...LOL
These Mother’s who refuse to cover up one day will find themselves in photos online by pervs who like to watch this stuff and there will be nothing they can do about it because they were taken in public. To insist that there is nothing wrong with exposing themselves is foolish because there are many tweeked people in our society who don’t care what the h*ll they think.
