Breast-feeding mother sues airlines

Yesterday, Emily Gillette filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vermont, setting the stage for a legal battle, according to the Burlington Free Press.

Three years ago, Gillette, her husband, Brad, and their then 22-month-old daughter, River, were ordered to leave a plane at Vermont's Burlington International Airport. It was a New York-bound Delta Connections flight operated by Freedom Airlines.

Gillette was nursing River when a flight attendant asked her to cover up. Gillette refused. The flight attendant asked again, offering a blanket. The then 27-year-old mother continued to refuse. The flight attendant "pointed to the exit and demanded: 'Just get off the plane,'" the court documents read.

FWIW, kids can fly as “infant in arms” - unticketed - until 23.999 months old. They MUST however, stay in the lap of the parent, even with an open seat available. On and after 2nd birthday? Then the parents must have a ticket for the child.

To me 22 mos. is really pretty old to fly “infant in arms” AND is pretty much beyond the top end of still nursing. My wife cut off our kids as soon as the first tooth started to have an ‘impact’ ;-)

I've got a buck that says this is a case of a "respect my authoritay" stewardess versus a raving Vermont liberal moonbat.

I think that probably sums it up.

Yeah the issue here was never about breastfeeding. It’s about covering up. Nothing unreasonable about that, and I hope the airline wins and can recover costs and fees.

That has to have its limits. A stewardess can’t tell passengers ANYTHING. They can’t order the ugly passengers to put bags over their heads.

That’s what I’m curious about. The Vermont statute says nothing about covering up.

Don't give 'em any ideas.

What I was implying was that maybe she had to wait three years because it’s a new law?????

I hate flying. I pretty much avoid it at all costs. It’s such a hassle. Yea, I have a little fear too. I know, tons of flights every day. But I believe we as a species are in a process of de-evolution, getting dumber and less capable as time goes on. I just don’t trust society with my life. I’d rather take my chances on the roads, where at least it’s my hands on the wheel. And even then, bridges make me nervous. I think society is crumbling, literally and otherwise.

I’ll go with you, and add my two cents — it’s about complying with “crewmember instructions.” The FEDERAL law is clear. If the on-duty crew instructs you to do something in the spirit of flight and/or personal safety, or for the comfort and safety of your fellow passengers, or in compliance with FAA regs ... you shall comply.

I fly 150,000 (business) miles a year, domestic and international. I am a travel snob. I also have empathy for the flight attendants trying to do their job with @$$hole rookie/nOOb leisure travelers. I am making a prejudiced inference, I admit, in placing at LEAST 51% of the blame for this on the passenger.

“Whip it out” is a figure of speech. Whip the breast out just doesn’t have the same zing.”

I prefer the term “sling” as in “slinging them about”

“Unholstering” is a great term to use as well

yeah well...I’m house broke allready or the wife would up and leave...she doesnt want to have wasted 20 years...she said she doenst have the will to break in another man...

Reminds me of a short story...

I was christmas shopping with my oldest son when he was around 7 or 8 IIRC...

I hear...”dad..looks it’s the adams family”...like really loud..

“Huh”!?! *looks around thinking it was a toy*

There a mere feet away..was an entire family of Goths....Mom, Dad, all tattoo’d and pierced...kids all in black, hair dyed black, girls in Goth makeup...all staring at us...

I laughed so loud I had to snatch him up and leave the store...

Like Father like Son...

Amen. I agree respect for yourself and the people around you is very important. However, still breast feeding at 2yrs is a bit over the edge. I was in the dentist office waiting room about a year ago when in pops this women with a boy of about 2 or 3 (walking and talking). She sits down and proceeds to whip out her breast and starts to breast feed the kid standing in front of her. WOW.

The FEDERAL law is clear.

Can you please post the relevant Federal Statute?

Thanks in advance.

I”m really getting tired of these breastfeeding nazis...bad enough don’t think they should cover up in public, but they browbeat any woman who can’t or won’t breastfeed. And their cry of “it’s natural”? So is sex, birth, and relieving waste..I don’t want to see it in public.

Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world. It shouldn’t have to be covered up.

True —

It has to be about/concerning flight safety, personal safety, safety and comfort of fellow passengers, FAA regs, and airline policy.

**IF** you ever listen to what a flight attendant says during all the blah blah blah announcements, one would hear this made abundantly clear. It’s also on the back of paper tickets, and posted online of ALL US carrier websites under policy. The FAA.gov site has this stuff as well.

In reality, flight attendants and gate agents (and flight crew guys up front) can bounce you, at will, if they feel you will interfere with or disrupt a flight. Legally.
