Precise details of what transpired in Washington during the first week of the Yom Kippur War, launched by Egypt and Syria on October 6, 1973, are hard to come by, in no small measure owing to conflicting accounts given by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger regarding their respective roles.
What is clear, from the preponderance of information provided by those directly involved in the unfolding events, is that President Richard Nixon overriding inter-administration objections and bureaucratic inertia implemented a breathtaking transfer of arms, code-named Operation Nickel Grass, that over a four-week period involved hundreds of jumbo U.S. military aircraft delivering more than 22,000 tons of armaments.

God Bless Richard Nixon.
Hey big guy, you will love this story.
Glad to hear he did SOME things right.
Go figure

Ah yes, I remember my unit taking equipment to the depot to send to our allies. It took a couple years for us to get back up to our full authorized stuff on hand.
Richard Nixon was always a stout friend of Israel.
Compare and contrast with Carter, who, when the arabs imposed the oil embargo against the USA for supporting Israel -— with Iran controlled by the Shah being the only Gulf nation who continued to supply oil the the USA -— rewarded the Shah by getting him deposed for his implicit support of Israel.
And it was not just any arms - it was advanced anti-tank rounds, SAM busters and air-to-air missiles - just what they needed to turn the tide...
I had heard from someone “in-the-know” that Nixon had the military at Defcon 2 during this time in expectation of an attack by Russia on Israel. Did anyone else ever hear that?
Don’t confuse secular American Jews with Israeli Jews.
Thanks...very good info.
“Ah yes, I remember my unit taking equipment to the depot to send to our allies.”
And my uncle remembers notes and instructions on equipment, written in hand by American soldiers (along with cases of beer and Playboy magazines under seats!) regarding the peculiarities of equipment.
When I was in the AF met a pilot involved in ferrying replacement F-4’s to Israel. Told me how they rendezvoused with an Israeli jet that told them to follow him, and turn to land when he told them. My buddy and the flight of F-4’s followed him, were told to prepare for landing, then to turn final approach and land. My friend said he thought they were nuts, only empty desert in front of them. He didn’t see the airfield AT ALL till he was almost over the approach end of the runway, the camouflage was that good.
This would come very close to world war 3 in short order. Kissinger, with Nixon’s approval, apparently told the soviets to turn their forces around from going to egypt/suez or the united states would start a nuclear war.
This incident doesn’t receive anything close to the coverage it deserves.
page 145 discusses the defcon level issue and why/where it went.
Not just that. When the Russkies made noise about sending in troops to rescue the trapped Egyptian army in the Sinai, Nixon put us on higher state of alert in some areas to DEFCON 2, basically threatening them with nuclear war.
God can use any instrument to carry out His Will.

“He knew that his enemies . . . would never give him credit for saving Israel. He did it anyway.”
That line says it all.
