Former President Jimmy Carters view that some of the recent protests against President Obama, including the You Lie! outburst by Representative Joe Wilson last week, are based on racism, has fueled a new war of words over this already charged issue.
The former president first weighed in on Tuesday during a question-and-answer session at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Mr. Carter responded to a question about Mr. Wilsons eruption by saying that he did believe it was laced with racism. Coupling the Wilson remark with the images in recent weeks of angry demonstrators wielding signs depicting Mr. Obama as a Nazi or as Adolf Hitler, Mr. Carter said: There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.
He lamented the tone of disrespect toward the current president, adding: Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care. Its deeper than that.
Mr. Carters criticisms drew a sharp response from Michael Steele, the African-American chairman of the Republican party, who called the remarks an outrage. In a statement, Mr. Steele said: President Carter is flat out wrong. This isnt about race. It is about policy. This is a pathetic distraction by Democrats to shift attention away from the presidents wildly unpopular government-run health care plan that the American people simply oppose.

Carter, like Sharpton and Jackson, are the first ones to cry racism of others when in truth it is the very same people who are exposed as the racists.
Racism is dead, Demonrats. You can’t inject life into the corpse. Go play in somebody else’s country!
Of course, like so many elite, aged Democrats of his circle, Carter projects his own racism on others because he can’t believe they do not sin in their hearts as he, so evidently, still does. Carter is the racial offender and hater; just a despicable excuse for a former POTUS.
It doesn’t need a genius to realize that Obama is special. He hurts the black man worse than Jim Crow could.
LOL!! That was good — very good!
Would someone check Jimmy’s DEPENDS? He is so cranky I wouldn’t be surprised if it were found he is sitting in a big stinking pile of his own poop.
Osama binLaden just endorsed Carter’s book. (Jimmy Carter can write a book? Really?)
This is the book that caused several directors of the Carter Center (his fellow leftists!) to resign, saying that Carter is anti-Semitic. Kenneth Stein and others cited the antisemitism along with the book’s lack of any footnotes or scholarly references and that the miniscule amount of research done does not support his claims.
Ted Kennedy called obama, osama. Was that racist?
That is not a “real” American word.
You know, as in the MSM tirade that “real” American means just the white folks.
Excactly. With all the media accusing us of being racists, it will just anger people more and there will be no turning back. We are sick of this. The word has no meaning anymore. I look for the networks and cable news ratings to descend with BO and Co.
I hate Obama for the same reasons I hate Stalin, Lenin, Castro and Chavez...They are all communist-Marxists.
He didn't say "some", NYT. He said "an overwhelming portion." In other words, the vast majority of those objecting to Obama's policies are motivated by racism.
That must be why Bill Clinton received so much affection and cooperation from conservatives.
Cater has a narrow, isolated mind. Jimmy must think this is 1955
obozo sat in rev. wrights church for 20 yrs and called rev. wright his mentor, the church of hate whity and hate America... and i am the racist???
Get used to it!
“obozo sat in rev. wrights church for 20 yrs and called rev. wright his mentor, the church of hate whity and hate America... and i am the racist???”
Bingo! This needs to be said over and over, everytime racism is charged.
Sadly, ozman you haven't seen the beginning of what they are capable of. These are just words after all...
