One Second After
September 6, 2009 | Immadashell

I have just finished reading William R. Forstchen's new novel One Second After. Briefly, it is about the instantaneous breakdown of American way of life as the result of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) which disables the nation's electrical grid as well as all sophisticated electrical components in cars (they stop), planes (they crash), telecomunications of every sort, etc. leaving the population in a world similar to that of the Eighteenth Century. Shortages of every variety create societal strains, chaos, death and destruction in a matter of weeks and months. Forstchen's book (with a forward written by Newt Gingrich), while fiction, creates a scenario which can happen to us today, since the technology already exists. The possibility of this devastation has been largely ignored by our politicians and media, and, to a lesser extent, by the military. Only a very small proportion of our citizens has ever heard about EMP. Even fewer have taken measures to deal with it. Experts on the subject have no doubt about whether we will have to eventually face such an attack. They only question when it will occur.

After reading this book, my first thought was we spend billions (potentially trillions) of dollars preparing for a hypothetical calamity we are powerless over like global warming and yet ignore preparing for this ultimate weapon of asymmetrical warfare.

I highly recommend this very frightening but readable new book. It is science fiction (#1 on Amazon) today but could be reality One Second After.

It is permanent, but pretty much line-of-sight as well, which the book briefly mentions.

but the grid will go down permanently due to the loss of nearly irreplaceable (in the short term of a few years or less) the huge transformers
Bzzzzt!

You're assuming a non-adaptable, fixed, situation, where the power company/transmission operators are just going to SIT THERE like ducks waiting to be picked off when the BM is finally detonated over the US even given the advance notice via launch detection.

Nice advice ... 'sit and wait' and do nothing.

The term is "Faraday Shield." It can be something as simple as a covered, metal garbage can
Bzzzzzt wrong!

Faraday shields only work on the electrostatic portion of the EM wave ... you're still going to be magnetically affected ...

(What is the fetish all you ppl have on the 'Faraday cage' thing anyway?)

Pretty much. I don't trust the powers for some reason. And when I was told that tasers are a ‘different’ frequency that this electronics/radar tech understands, well...

I understood that police today aren't worth s**t.

They killed the preacher because they thought he was trying to run their sorry a**es over when they jumped out of a Cadillac Escillade (the choice of drug dealers the country over) while wearing thug-wear. But this poor citizen was to instantly comprehend that the bling on a string these Nazis were sporting. Gangs of New York thug type police badges. Now, today's sh*t-birds that claim that the police of today are something other than the gangs that democrat politicians swore in to keep their political enemies in the hinterlands....

Well, they are complete and utter ignoramuses. They really believe that Bloomberg is really interested in stopping the illicit trade of firearms and drugs. The idiots aren't worth the DNA expended in their creation. Police today are thugs. Even their apologists on this site that believe school security officer Cheeks is right because he has the 'badge'. Our ancestors burned them on the split rail via hot tar and feathers.

So what affords protection, mountains, etc? Certainly not the roof of the garage, right?

I’m assuming by line-of-site we mean that electronics protected by structures that, for instance, can block the shock wave of a nuke attack?

I haven’t even finished the “Lights Out” e-book. At page 300 or so, I still don’t think its all that realistic.

‘Lights Out” by Halfast is one of those books that we who have been studying electronic theorum for the past 20+ years realize that it is really possible.

If we devolve into pre-electric times, the idea of current times continuing is the concept of fools.

But I am sure that idiots who don’t really understand electronics have a better understanding than those of us who have spent the last 25 years working this because know better because they are interenet geniuses.

Because they are smarter than the rest of us.

And they believe that Obama will save us.

Because he says so.

Cite?

Can you cite something to support your stated assertion?

BTW, there are structures and systems that take lightning hits on a regular basis and survive. Yes, its true.

Do you know who Polyphaser is and what they make?

How much science or engineering behind those articles?

Or is it just 'fear and panic'? (Fear and panic are both big sellers, almost as good as conspiracy theories!)

Because Faraday cages are known to absorb EMP waves and direct them to ground. Magnetic waves are of less concern to electronic components. A keyer tube isn’t likely to get skunked by EMP. Most electronic devices aren’t likely to be susceptible to magnetic interference.

They do no such thing.
