The purpose of this thread is to secure a commitment from each local Principal to provide an opt-out so that no one is forced to endure Obama's subtle, presumptuous speech. Below, I will provide a sample of reasonable letters we want the Principal to sign. If refused, we know where they stand and will take the appropriate action against them. Here is an article of how they roll in Colorado. http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2009/09/douglas_county_school_allows_p.php It would be useful if the only comments on this thread are how to do this, report your results and contact information for the press to report and follow-up on.
You are right, it is bad for the polity.
Unfortunately, I think it is inevitable. We are a nation so fundamentally divided on basic principles, it cannot be any other way. At least not for the forseeable future.
It's optional at Conroe ISD (also TX) but I have a request in to the school board to find out the agenda and if the infamous "I Pledge" video will be shown.
I also understand from the lone conservative at the Houston Chronicle that a "kit" has been distributed ahead of the speech.
How would you climbing into bed with that dog every night?
Ah, no. I like it here.
In Texas, children pulled out of school for the day will cost districts about $35 per child, as state funding for schools is based on daily attendance. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6599457.html
Yeah NO Agit Prop towards children in Columbus, MO

Boooo and Shenanigans to those equating this “historic event(Obama’s words) to other Presidential speeches. They are doing so without reference to the “lesson plan” provided by the Department of Education and also they are ignoring the context, timing and the fact that its coming off one of the worst defeats and poll numbers for a modern president.
That’s what I was worried about as well, but it actually hurt him as the reason our middle school isn’t showing it is because they already planned out the first day of school. Having a big event like this on 1st day is a bit harder to pull off at the last minute.

As of last night, our school’s principal told us they would be recording 0bama and after reviewing would play it the last period of the day. We opted out. I made sure to contact the school board and superintendent that they needed to announce to the district that it was possible to opt out.
While, whoo-hoo! I received this e-mail from the superintendent a short while ago:
“We would like to provide you with an update regarding how the district will handle President Obama’s address on the first day of school. We believe that the first day of school is an important time for teachers to build relationships with their students and to set the tone for the year. Therefore, our schools will not be changing our back-to-school plans to accommodate the address. If families want their children to see the address, it will be available on the Internet for viewing at home.”
0bama was indeed being sneaky going around school boards and contacting principals directly. Commie creep is going to feel the backlash now and I hope his popularity tanks even more.
Let me try that again.
Here’s some good news from San Antonio

And neither of them was accompanied by as sample lesson plan which asked the students to write an essay about "how can I help President Obama?" That has since been scrubbed on the electronic version, but there are plenty of before/after versions to be viewed on the Web.
Yes, Obama's intended speech is probably innocuous. But, the accompanying materials that went out "in advance" hinted at another agenda.
We'll never know whether it was intended or not. But, by appearing to politicize Obama's address to the students, these fools have indeed ruined the opportunity for future Presidents to do the same.
BTW, when Bush made his address on the dangers of drugs, Democrats made the same kind of complaints.
Broward County (Florida) School Superintendent has officially killed any opt out.
It's not one day, it's every day.
Schools get paid according to the number of students each day. In schools with multiple classes, they choose one period -- I believe it was the 2nd period in mine.
“I hope his popularity tanks even more.”
Yep, he and hs cronies have steped in it big time.
As one FReeper said, “He just came up and slapped Mama Bear in the face” Mama and Daddy bear will not be happy.
LEAVE THOSE (our) KIDS ALONE YOU MARXIST POS!
Some schools don’t start until Sept 9th. sOme people think it has to do with the court case in California on sept 8th.
Congratulations on your hard work on this. I just called our school district, I was told that they will return my call later today or tomorrow.
I like the idea of opt-out but I would rather see the option made opt-in.

“If a child chooses not to watch the speech, the child will be sent to our media center to engage in an individual literacy activity directed by the teacher.”
I bet the Media Center is overwhelmed and the kids will have to move to the gym or auditorium.
“I liked her in those Jack Link Beef Jerkey commercials.”
