In ten days (I'd say ten short days, but this time of year the days are never short enough), Ohio State will open its 2009 season with a home game against the United States Naval Academy. It will mark the first time these two teams have faced each other since the 1981 Liberty Bowl, which the Buckeyes won, 31-28. Prior to that, Ohio State and Navy hadn't played since 1931.
Ohio State University wants its fans to know that this isn't exactly the Kentucky School of Turfgrass Management that's coming to town. The Midshipmen are giving up a minimum of four years of their postgraduate life serving this country in harm's way and face a brutal class load off the field. Consequently, they deserve a better treatment than hearing "YOU SUCK, 23" from five directions at once. OSU has a YouTube video saying as much (video after the jump).

Outstanding. No matter what you think of OSU, this is a great way to begin a wonderful tradition.
At least it’s a start. Most colleges today would hand out war protest posters. Maybe the tide is turning a bit. Probably this change is due in part to the success of the TEA bag rallies, and conservatives standing up for America again.
Just never ask them to to this for Michigan. ;)

Good Job. What a weenie out of conference schedule. This must be why they always lose to an SEC team in their bowl game. At least Navy will get enough $ to pay for the rest of their athletic programs. I Ohio St. had any cahones, they would challenge Navy to a lacrosse game.
The creepy left doesn’t show up at the games. The faculty (99% leftist) will be polite.
Some students will be confused, of course by equating Bush with the recession. Which is true of course. But Clinton and Obama have really done so much damage its not funny.

Most schools already show respect for any service academy.Sad that OSU had to put out a video asking for their own fans to not yell YOU suck or the other crap they ususally do.
Ohio State is a really nasty hostile place for opposing school’s fans to visit, from beer being thrown on you as you walk to the stadium to dodging burning trash cans and couches as you leave.
Too bad OSU didn’t ask for courtersy to all fans in that video.

As a Navy Vet... I hope that it does work for them and Ohio... Class act....

As I am sure many do.... I know the midwest is still a very pro-military area.... Glad I was raised there...
I should have said most schools not in the same conference as a service school.
A conference rival trumps everything else since you play them every year and develop the same hatred toward them as you would any rival.
Still I think it is great for OSU to realize how terrible they act toward opposing schools and for one game at least try to act civil
Yup. Many Navy fans in uniform will find it hard to pay for drinks at a lot of bars. People often just pay for them without telling. (I’ve seen that a lot there.)
There might be some idiots who spout off. Would be a bad move and a.bad day for them...
