EDMONTONOwners of pint-sized Smart cars aren't laughing about reports that vandals may be targeting the tiny vehicles in a 21st-century take on tipping cows over.
The Internet and blogosphere are abuzz with media reports that pranksters may have pushed several of the tiny vehicles into canals in Amsterdam.
And now a man in his 40s is charged with mischief for allegedly tipping a Smart car onto its side along Edmonton's Whyte Avenue, a trendy bar-and-boutique strip that sometimes attracts rowdy drinkers.
Windows, exterior mirrors and panelling on the car were damaged, and despite the outrage of owner Kevin Spaans, amused bystanders posed with the flipped car and snapped photos with their cellphone cameras.
Police are seeking other suspects, but one official said it appears to have been an isolated occurrence.
Ken Lust, sales manager at David Morris Fine Cars, which sells the popular car, says goofing around with it isn't a harmless prank but rather a brazen act of property damage.
Lust has himself been a victim. Three years ago, he went outside one morning on a property he owns northeast of Edmonton to find that somebody had tipped his Smart car over during the night.
"The first reaction is shock and disbelief. The second reaction is anger because your car has been vandalized. It's the same feeling, I guess, if you walked out and saw your paint all scratched up or your windows smashed in," he said.
No one was ever arrested. Lust believes it was the work of several fellows who probably had too much to drink that night.
The sales manager spent several hundred dollars repairing smashed windows and a bent gas cap.

Oops! One more reason I love my SUV.
Hate crime.
Carbecue.
The government’s own studies prove CAFE standards kill.
LOL...I used to have a beautifully restored '66 MGB, and I know exactly what you mean...Mine had "all the options" including an ash tray, leather seats, AM radio, lap belts and a heater core that generated just enough BTU's that on a cold day, I would have my choice of warmth or a defogged windscreen. It took an origami expert to get the roof on, and which, when assembled, kept about 80% of the rain off the driver.
I loved that little car precisely because it made you REALLY appreciate open air motoring on a beautiful day!
Heheh...”80% of the rain”!
I would have to see that to believe it, Oldexpat!
EcoGeek car tipping is for novices.
EcoCar setting is the wave of the future.
You select a suave latte shop with lots of Leftist hangersout. Then you pick up the car and set it where the outside patio tables would be.
It will make for interesting morning talk conversation.
I ended up having to sell the “B” due to re-assignment circumstances, but a year or two later, got a brand new Miata, which was a great little car in its own right, but I must admit, comfort was a given, and open-air was just another mode of driving. In the MG I paid much closer attention to weather forecasts, and never took beautiful days for granted, like I later found myself doing in the Miata :-)
Hehe...my new wife impelled me to sell it, and I was ready. She drove a Toyota that NEVER broke down, and I said “I want a car like that”.
I do miss my little chartreuse (piss yellow/green) MG, though...
This isn't mine but it looked a lot like this...
You see them going a lot faster than that on the Autobahns.

The first one I saw was in Paris on Champs d’Elysee, circa 2001.
Seemed like a good idea for tight city traffic and parking.
But the Autobahn? Not me.
Maybe not, but the Germans seemed perfectly happy to do so.
I had a B and had a long relaitonshp with the Lucas electrical system
Poor truck, likely totaled.
Smart Car tipping is funny, wouldn’t do it, but wouldn’t stop laughing at the lib when he came out.
Pray for America
It did an 1/8th mile wheelie with bug power (never on the street).
It's currently gutted in preparation of putting the drive train of a 1st gen Eclipse turbo into it (about 300 ponies, mid engine, AWD: flipping the transfer case).
Kind of a redneck Atom.
For fun search youtube.com for 'smart car Hayabusa'.
I want one of those too.
I guess it goes to show who respects who more.
