A SCOTTISH soldier has been praised for making the longest recorded kill in Afghanistan after shooting a top Taliban fighter from almost a mile away.

Corporal Christopher Reynolds took out the Afghan drug lord during some of the hardest fighting of the war so far.

The 25-year-old, of 3 Scots, The Black Watch, kept watch on a shop rooftop for three days to eliminate the target.

But he admitted the top-level Taliban fighter – known as Musa – was so far away it took him a couple of attempts to get the aim right.

Initially Musa, who was with four men, did not even realise he was being shot at.

But Cpl Reynolds, of Dalgety Bay, in Fife, together with his spotter Lance Corporal David Hatton, worked out different factors such as wind speed and the trajectory of the bullet to hit the target. Musa, who was more than 1,500 metres away, was taken out with a

I know that I can hit targets at over 1500 yds with my AR-30 in .338 Lapua Mag. The only problem is that where I live it is difficult finding a range long enough.

Thats right, I’ve not seen a .416 Barrett, but the description I have it must be very similar to the Chey-Tac .416 round. The biggest disadvantage to the rounds based on the .50 is weight of the rifle. The lightest one I’ve fired was 38 lbs. Can you imagine packing that around in the mountains somewhere?

Billy Dixon’s famous shot was later measured out to be 1538 yards by surveyors who were curious about the incident.

In his book, he described the loaned rifle as nothing more than “a big fifty”. Actual cartridge is unknown as is the make and model of the rifle.

Furlong. What an appropriate name.

Funny, I never caught that. A shot at 12 times himself?

The more my skill in shoooting increases the more I admire someone who can make a shot such as this. That is a long way to go.

I beg to differ, Nick Ranstad, 173rd Airborne 1-91st Airborne Cavalry “Hatchet” Recon Platoon, dropped a tango in A-Stan at 2100 meters or 1.3 miles.

I have friend who’s father owns farm land that he basically does not farm anymore. So I have been able shoot some long range shots on their property. I’ve been shooting into a natural dirt dam that is on one side of a small pond. I’m considering seeing if I can buy some of those large hay rounds and put two on the bottom and one on the top that would give me something to shoot into and to hang targets on. I don’t think a round would go through then since they are about five foot high and 6 foot deep.

Can’t even imagine humping that around on the flats. Plus the ammo.

I would imagine any centerfire rifle bullet can penetrate a hay bale.

How about one of the large hay rounds? They are 5-6 foot tall and 6-8 foot deep.

It’s very hilly over there.

He was most likly shooting across a valley.

I’ve done that with mountain goats.

By the time you go down the hill you’re on then up the hill he’s on, your target has seen you OR you can’t find them again OR they have moved.

This move also take hours.

There is an awful lot of airspace in a haybale. I think it would be like shooting through a great big sponge.

The large round bales here in the midwest are pretty dense. A guy was loading one up on a trailer and it fell on him and crushed him to death.
