White House Move to Collect 'Fishy' Info May Be Illegal, Critics Say
Foxnews ^

The White House strategy of turning supporters into snitches when they see "fishy" information about the health care debate may run afoul of the law, legal experts say. "The White House is in bit of a conundrum because of this privacy statute that prohibits the White House from collecting data and storing it on people who disagree with it," Judge Andrew Napolitano, a FOX News analyst, said Friday. "There's also a statute that requires the White House to retain all communications that it receives. It can't try to rewrite history by pretending it didn't receive anything," he said. "If the White House deletes anything, it violates one statute. If the White House collects data on the free speech, it violates another statute."

But the [ACLU] added, "While it is unclear at this point what the government is doing with the information it is collecting, critics of the administration's health care proposal should not fear that their names will end up in some government database that could be used to chill their right to free speech."

Remember the Patriot Act and the contortions these same folks displayed when it came to library books?

He can if we retake the house and senate. If Bush had even suggested something like this they would have him in leg irons by now.

exactly. I am pretty sure the DHS report naming vets and others as being worth special attention etc. was the same thing, they knew they would have to ‘withdraw’ the report; the intent was to create an ambiance of intimidation and fear, even just a little. The message is there for all to see..

The Lives of Others is absolutely outstanding. Everybody on this thread should see it. Not just for the obvious look at surveillance issues, but for its expose on communism in practice: the personalities, the apparatus, the corruption, and the death of humanity. We'd be in a far better place right now if the idiots in Hollywood would have the balls to release a film that dared to eviscerate Lenin and ideologues the way "Lives" does. The entire film revolves around Lenin's statement about the Appasionata and the violent death of ones humanity in the face of ideology.

I've been telling everybody I know about that movie for the past several months. I watched it for the 5th or 6th time last Saturday and it really got to me in the wake of the White House's citizen snitch program. I was drafting a new thread to promote it on this site, but didn't want to be a noob posting a vanity thread.

The idiots in Hollywood are neo-Marxists. See, e.g., Robert Redford. Don’t expect anything out of them except movies praising communists.
