Throughout the 2008 campaign, Barack Hussein Obama claimed it was a “smear” to refer to him as “Barack Hussein Obama.” The candidate had initially rhapsodized over how his middle name, the name of the prophet Mohammed’s grandson, would signal a new beginning in American relations with the Muslim world. But when the nomination fight intensified, Obama decided that Islamic heritage was a net negative. So, with a media reliably uncurious about political biographies outside metropolitan Wasilla, Obama did what Obama always does: He airbrushed his personal history on the fly.
Suddenly, it was “just making stuff up,” as Obama put it, for questioners “to say that, you know, maybe he’s got Muslim connections.” “The only connection I’ve had to Islam,” the candidate insisted, “is that my grandfather on my father’s side came from [Kenya]. But I’ve never practiced Islam.” Forget about “Hussein”; the mere mention of Obama’s middle initial — “H” — riled the famously thin-skinned senator. Supporters charged that “shadowy attackers” were “lying about Barack’s religion, claiming he is a Muslim.” The Obamedia division at USA Today, in a report subtly titled “Obama’s grandma slams ‘untruths,’” went so far as to claim that Obama’s Kenyan grandmother is a Christian — even though a year earlier, when Obama’s “flaunt Muslim ties” script was still operative, the New York Times had described the same woman, 85-year-old Sara Hussein Obama, as a “lifelong Muslim” who proclaimed, “I am a strong believer of the Islamic faith.”

The editorial desire to put to rest the “Obama was born in Kenya” canard is justifiable. The overwhelming evidence is that Obama was born an American citizen on Aug. 4, 1961, which almost certainly makes him constitutionally eligible to hold his office. I say “almost certainly” because Obama, as we shall see, presents complex dual-citizenship issues. For now, let’s just stick with what’s indisputable: He was also born a Kenyan citizen. In theory, that could raise a question about whether he qualifies as a “natural born” American — an uncharted constitutional concept.
The fact is that Obama’s account of his background is increasingly revealed as a fabrication, not his life as lived; his utterances reflect the expediencies of the moment, not the truth.
Excellent article. Maybe even successful in retrieving NRO’s generally excellent conservative credentials that they really screwed up with their recent Birthers editorial.
This is actually a very comprehensive and well written article and anyone who slams 'birthers' should read before opining.
What really galls me is not that BO is a liar, but that the so-called MSM is so corrupt, incurious, and slavish. A plague on all their houses; I rejoice when they go bankrupt.

Obama was adopted and became and Indosisian citizen at which point he relinquished any other citizenship--US and or UK--that he may have had.
The school records and the Dunham-Sotero divorce are probably more key than the BC!
The theory that Obama was born in Kenya, that he was smuggled into the U.S., and that his parents somehow hoodwinked Hawaiian authorities into falsely certifying his birth in Oahu, is crazy stuff.
This is the only part of the article where McCarthy goofs. Section 338-5 of the Hawii Revised Statutes, the lineal descendant of the statute that applied in 1961, provides:
§338-5 Compulsory registration of births. Within the time prescribed by the department of health, a certificate of every birth shall be substantially completed and filed with the local agent of the department in the district in which the birth occurred, by the administrator or designated representative of the birthing facility, or physician, or midwife, or other legally authorized person in attendance at the birth; or if not so attended, by one of the parents.
The birth facility shall make available to the department appropriate medical records for the purpose of monitoring compliance with the provisions of this chapter. [L 1949, c 327, §9; RL 1955, §57-8; am L Sp 1959 2d, c 1, §19; HRS §338-5; am L 1988, c 149, §1]

Thus, it would have been quite easy for Stanley Ann Dunham to fly into Hawaii with the newly born Barry and fraudulently register his birth herself as one that occurred in Hawaii, but not in a birthing facility. Once she did that, the original falsification would be automatically carried over to all of the secondary records, including the birth announcement that was apparently and routinely sent by the Hawaii Department of Health to the local newspapers, which has regularly been used by Obama stooges to "prove" he was born in Hawaii.

I sure wish he had written it before some on our side (like Coulter and Lowry) were so fearful of being called a ‘birther’ and ridiculed themselves, that they felt compelled to jump on the liberal bandwagon in lobbing insults at us. There is no real consensus among those of us called ‘birthers’, other than we all believe Obama is a liar and is hiding vast amounts of his history from the American people. No republican candidate would have ever been allowed to get away with that kind of behavoir..but Obama gets a free ride from the media on all of his lies, his marxist background and his questionable dealings with questionable people.
Same thing goes for his utter failures in economic policy,record deficit spending and naively dangerous foreign policy....the media rushes about with great energy defending Obama’s literal destruction of our country. Obama is destroying the free market system that made our country the most prosperous in the history of the world and now he is set to destroy the best healthcare system known to man.
WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO THIS MAN IS EXACTLY AND TRUTHFULLY. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DESERVE NO LESS AND THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENTITLED TO IT BEFORE HE WAS ELECTED!

I think we can craft some excellent talking points that will roll the state run media bit by bit. “We only want to know the personal history of the leader of the free world.”
I thought this too but I have changed my mind. I now think Hillary was more afraid to be called a racist if she pushed the NBC issue. I think she really thought she could beat him without bringing up the "natural born citizen" requirement. I think she was afraid and fearful that Obama's campaign would bury her since the media was already Obama's propaganda machine during the lead up to the primary run.
I think people were afraid to validate and check his qualifications because they didn't want to be accused as a racist.
I think Congress lacks the courage muscle to research the issue now. The media is a lost cause. People like Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham are not interested in reading up on the issue so their current position on NBC issue is based on ignorance and fear.
We all need to get over the fear of being called a "racist." Axelrod, EManuel, Pete Rouse, and Jarrett are all counting on suppressing the truth by using the racist card. As long as people live in fear Obama and his crew are happy. They know people are less likely to challenge him.
He promised transparency and this is holding him to the fire. It is hard work holding people to the fire.
