Republican and Democratic senators negotiating financial details of healthcare reform have made great progress and are on the verge of a deal, a key Republican senator said on Wednesday.
"We have made great progress. Every day we make some progress," Sen. Charles Grassley, one of the three Republicans from Senate Finance Committee involved in the talks to overhaul the healthcare system, told NPR radio.
"Will we get it done so we can get a bill to the other members by this weekend because there is a certain time you've got to give people to study it? We're on the edge, and almost there," the Iowa Republican said.
President Barack Obama has pinpointed healthcare as his top legislative priority and has pushed lawmakers to quickly reach a deal to rein in healthcare costs, improve care and cover most of the 46 million uninsured Americans.
Obama had asked the Senate and House to come up with initial draft bills before they leave for the August recess but this deadline looks increasingly unlikely to be met.
Lawmakers "wanted to do it right," said Grassley, noting that lawmakers are trying to revamp one-sixth of the economy.

I thought the same. Then I saw Grassley shooting off his mouth. I was really starting to like his curmudgeonly heckling of Obama. One thing is for certain that Obamacare is far from dead.
“maybe enough Dems will oppose it.”
I heard that the ultra liberal Dems said they wouldn’t vote for it if it didn’t have the government option.
Grassley is up next year.
Grasserly is up for election in 2010..
Considering we are talking about sixteen percent of what is left of the American economy, by definition lawmakers are pathologically UNABLE to 'do it right'.
I would think that no one is surprised by this. :D
As Sarah Palin resigned as Governor of Alaska this past Sunday, I challenge you to name ONE good Republican.
....(crickets)....
Yep, about what I thought.
EVERYONE should call and email Grassley, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.
Google Maps is your friend for verifying your address. Also, all have alternate local phone numbers in their district/state if you can not get through at Wash DC number.
I can, he's from IOWA

IOWA. Grassley fits the definition of an IOWAN perfectly. (Hell, I ought to know ... I used to live there!)
“Grassley is a good man”.
Don’t know the man. All I know is if he’s helping the leftists nationalize health care, he’s scum, pure scum. What else is new?
Listening to Weiner is a sure sign of insanity, yes.
Everyone should be calling and or emailing Grassley, Snowe, and Collins

If Grassley sells out to give us “health care,” your political handicapping means squat.
When will you get it.
This is not about Dems versus Reps or Donkeys versus Elephants.
Its about Americans versus Socialists and Grassley becomes a Socialist when he signs on with Obama.
Then he does not deserve to be re-elected next year.
There can be no loyalty to any Socialist RINO’s. Grassley should be Specterized and driven out of the GOP like Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland.
After all, what's important, anyway?
It looks like Obama has given up on getting the vote. I don’t really think Grassley would vote for the bill unless he is going nuts. I still think it is counterproductive for him not to stay on message. The message is simple, “The only reform that is acceptable is one based entirely in the private sector”. The GOP needs to learn how to simply define and defend their positions but instead just when you are thinking you might be able to trust them and their judgment you see one either kissing up to the press thinking no one will notice or doing something like this thinking he is being cute when he very well knows he’d be skinned alive politically if he went along with Obamacare.

I hope that is the case as well, but just to make sure, keep calling Congress and tell them we don’t want it.
It was reported today the “Blue Dog” Dems have agreed to stop holding up the House bill, their reward being no vote until after the August recess. Maybe that was their objective, get more time so the word can get out to the public about what a crock these bills are, always assuming the public gives a damn of course.
Republican Senators "making great progress" on the complete sellout of our country
