(Not only that, but the policeman had already observed him as an older black male, and did not indicate that he observed ANY suspicious activity.)

You are attempting to interpret the facts rather than go with them. Let me counter your comment thusly: A guy breaks into your house and a passerby sees it and calls the cops. The cops show up and knock on the door. The thief answers and decides to pretend he is the resident. The cops ask some questions to get a feel for the situation, but keeping in mind that someone saw what looked like a break-in. Imagine the perp doing the “righteous indignation” ploy. This would really put the cops “something is not right” antenna up. And it is actually the responsibility of the cops to make this judgement. Literally, the more you prostest in such a situation, the more likely you are guilty of exactly what they are looking for.
If this went down even similarly to the police report. Gates was dead wrong from the git-go.
In my case, if this had happened to me exactly the way it happened to him, I would have laughed it off and thanked them for following up (and thanked the woman for caring enough to call on what a reasonable person would think was someone breaking into my house) and I would have offered ID to show them that it was my house.
End of story.
Based on every single account I have read, other than Mr Gates, Mr Gates was dead wrong here. Unless he has other sources of reliable information, he should be thankfull they dropped the charges.
THis is not about race. It is about a beligerent citizen with a chip on his shoulder. Race was just his particular excuse.

If everything the policeman did was so proper, and Gates is so obviously guilty, why were the charges against him dropped?
Gates was arrested. He was not charged with anything. He was arrested and then released, ostensibly when he regained his composure. The action seems fitting if stopping a public nuisance was the goal.
This matter would only be a significant issue in the mind of a clearly identified racist, Mr. Gates, had the Magic Negro not very inappropriately intervened.
Some are overturning every rock to understand the visceral hatred, lurking just beneath the surface of the current POTUS. I simply see Obama as a well groomed, finely tuned mouthpiece for the agitation of racial hatred.
Wow.. seriously man.. You are being a complete fool about this situation. There is no defense for this man the way he behaved to police and the way he behaved after the fact.
