Cambridge police commissioner defends officer in Gates arrest
Boston Globe ^ | July 23, 2009 | By Martin Finucane

The Cambridge police commissioner today defended the actions of the sergeant who arrested prominent black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. last week at his home, saying he believed the sergeant acted "consistent with his training" and without racial bias.

"I don't believe that Sergeant [James M.] Crowley acted with any racial motivation at all," said Commissioner Robert Haas.

Haas also revealed, in response to reporters' questions at the news conference, that Gates's house had been broken into before the incident. He did not specify exactly when the break-in had taken place.

Asked about Obama's comment, Cambridge police commissioner Robert Haas said that "this department is deeply pained."

"It deeply hurts the pride of this agency," he told a news conference this afternoon at city police headquarters.

"Sergeant Crowley followed proper protocol and procedures in making the arrest," said Haas, describing Crowley as a "stellar member of this department. I rely on his judgment every day."

I see this as reverse discrimination. Gates was the one who brought the racial hammer down on the officer, almost immediately. If the lead policeman had been black, Gates would have been more cooperative and this would have never happened.

The President of the United States of America went on national TV and used his influence to try to get a buddy out of a jam. Just like in some third world country.

But, Gates WAS ordered out of the house! NOT PROPER? Tell that to the Branch Davidians of 1993, who under Bill Clinton’s Attorney General, Janet Reno, were attacked by the US Military with FLAMETHROWERS after they refused to surrender! 85 were BURNED ALIVE.

Who knows what lurks (racism?) in the heart of self? Eg me.

Yes, why did policeman have to make such a big deal of it? But U r right, they want to show who is boss.

To protect & serve; four dead in Ohio.

Was saying “dumb” a vigorous attack? (Nupe.)

They dropped charges, misdemeanor yada yado. Hmm. They knew, SHOULD have known, this could get big. Why didn’t the prosecutor or magistrate just PUT this in front of a judge? Erm. (Obviously Gates is pushy and gets mad.)(When not on the job, aftr flight.) No, better to retreat & insist they were right. Where whites or white-wanna-be~s carry the batons+.

Building friendly relations /w th’ community.

Police appologize? (Vis. _sovereign immunity_ doctrine .) Keep your hands at 12:00, say yes massa’. &Yes Gates couda’ seen chance for a news-setTo. ..

Did the witnesses see how Gates was originally approached in the house? As a white professor? I can wonder. How about fabrications, eg on how many times Crowley gave his name. Co-operatively, in a way to be recalled,.. who knows?

Honest policemen get fired. I reckon I’ve more relatives/ roomates in higher-level police positions than... (try 3).
—Keeping their heads down. “Serpico” gives a picture of the necessary way to think in order to succeed in blue.

Crowley seems an above ave. officer. &Poor intellectuals, minorities know what to expect from....

Teaching courses on racial profiling. How ‘bout the Sundayschool super who is a chisler? (his last months were in our hs., talk the talk.... / / Oh yes, & quite unaware.

Exactly. I always thought the more conservative viewpoint was that a man’s home is his castle. Why couldn’t the officer have just walked away once it was established that Gates was in his own home and no crime had been committed? Even if Gates was upset and yelling on the front porch, just walk away and the incident ends. I didn’t hear anything from the officer stating that Gates was physical, violent or had touched the officers in any way. So what’s so hard about saying, “OK, the guy lives here. No “break-in” occurred. He’s upset and yelling at us. Let’s say ‘sorry to have disturbed you” and just leave.” That would have been the bigger, more professional thing to do than to slap handcuffs on the guy on his front porch and drag him downtown because he got sassy.

I agree. Yelling and being a jerk *on your own property* is not a crime.

The police will know the NAME of a resident of a house? NO WAY. UNREALISTIC.

The President has a history with this particular police department and maybe the specific officers. He received several parking citations, sometimes two a day, from them which he refused to pay the fines on for years, decades. He has absolutely no respect for any police (or military or doctors). He's a racists (possibly)...He blames the police...It was their fault he got the tickets. They targeted him, they targeted his car...cause he was black, cause his car was black He brags in his book how he pulled the wool over his grandparents eyes and did as he chose. He learned from them not to respect authority. And that he why he cannot lead with any authority. His press conference last night was a weak winded "present"!

The police are provided by the community because the community sees value in their service. They are given authority to keep peace within the community. If some members of the community start feeling uppity and think demeaning the police is within their right, they are going to find out that those who have authority are going to enforce respect for authority. If they don't, chaos will follow. It's common sense. It's within their rights. Gates was demeaning the police for no good cause in front of a growing crowd of onlookers. He deserved to be arrested.

I regularly see leftists yelling at the police on TV and I never see any of them being arrested. Can you explain this to me.

You need to stop watching the boob tube. Come visit Cambridge and start yelling at the cops in person. See what happens.

The racial profiling agenda may be the most damaging of all liberal policies. It erodes any incentive for white police officers to arrest black perpetrators at the scene of a crime. Why would they risk allegations of profiling?

Why does this case bother you? Why do you seem to take it personally?

You seem to be thinking about this emotionally instead of logically. Why? Be honest.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I just reread every one of my posts on this thread and it seems to me I've been relentlessly logical. Can you point me to what you found overly emotional or illogical?
