The Cambridge police commissioner today defended the actions of the sergeant who arrested prominent black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. last week at his home, saying he believed the sergeant acted "consistent with his training" and without racial bias.
"I don't believe that Sergeant [James M.] Crowley acted with any racial motivation at all," said Commissioner Robert Haas.
Haas also revealed, in response to reporters' questions at the news conference, that Gates's house had been broken into before the incident. He did not specify exactly when the break-in had taken place.
Asked about Obama's comment, Cambridge police commissioner Robert Haas said that "this department is deeply pained."
"It deeply hurts the pride of this agency," he told a news conference this afternoon at city police headquarters.
"Sergeant Crowley followed proper protocol and procedures in making the arrest," said Haas, describing Crowley as a "stellar member of this department. I rely on his judgment every day."

The prosecuter dropped the case against Gates. The laws here aren’t any different than New Jersey.

If everything the policeman did was so proper, and Gates is so obviously guilty, why were the charges against him dropped?
Gates was arrested. He was not charged with anything. He was arrested and then released, ostensibly when he regained his composure. The action seems fitting if stopping a public nuisance was the goal.
This matter would only be a significant issue in the mind of a clearly identified racist, Mr. Gates, had the Magic Negro not very inappropriately intervened.
Some are overturning every rock to understand the visceral hatred, lurking just beneath the surface of the current POTUS. I simply see Obama as a well groomed, finely tuned mouthpiece for the agitation of racial hatred.
Wow.. seriously man.. You are being a complete fool about this situation. There is no defense for this man the way he behaved to police and the way he behaved after the fact.

1. “This is how they treat BLACK MEN in America” this is a Harvard Professor, Obama should at the very least condemn the race baiting that his friend is guilty of. That could easily have come from a Jeramiah Wright Sermon so much for a post racial president. Says alot about what they must be teaching up there too.
2. I teach my children to obey the Police. I believe that it is in our best interest to be as cooperative as possible. Why does this Harvard Professor believe that the Policeman has anything but (Mr. Gates) best interests in mind? What fueled this Harvard Professor’s distain for White Police Officers?
Now further to my point. Do you have any doubt. Any doubt whatsoever that Gates would have filed a complaint against the police had they done nothing after being called out and his house was actually being robbed? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be all over the Whitey that let the bad guys get away because the owner was black.

Policemen are human beings, not gods, and are not ALWAYS right and do not ALWAYS have your best interests in mind.
Not at all. He can’t communicate with base if Gates is screaming in his ear in the foyer. It is reasonable to ask him to come outside where he can operate. I’d like to hear the tapes from base.
Depending on the degree, yelling at and insulting a cop in public, and thereby impeding his duties, sounds arrestable. I learned long ago that you should remain calm when speaking with the police.
First of all they didn't have to knock. The door was open and they saw this black geezer, not exactly someone who fits the profile of a guy who breaks into houses. The knew, or should have known his name. The policeman might have said, "Mr. Gates." He would have answered, "Yes," and that probably would have been the end of it. This just wouldn't happen where I live, or if it did the Chief in town would be falling all over himself to apologize, and I'm no one here.

Gates was never charged (with anything). He was arrested and then released without being charged.
At the point he pulled out the handcuffs, he was already out on the front porch and in the process of leaving.

I told Gates that I was leaving his residence and that if he had any other questions regarding the matter, I would speak with him outside of the residence
He didn't say he had any more questions for Gates, only that if Gates had any questions he could come outside.
When Gates continued yelling on the porch, the officer pulled out the handcuffs. At that point, I think the better course of action would be to let Gates continue to yell while the officer gets off Gates' property to transmit his report.
