FAIRBANKS - Fairbanks is expecting to be in the national spotlight Sunday when Gov. Sarah Palin formally steps down and Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell swears in to take her place.
The transition will take place during the governor's annual picnic, which is expected to draw about 5,000 people, according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
The former Republican vice presidential nominee announced her resignation plan July 3 without saying exactly what she would do next. She said she wants to continue to be involved in politics, but didn't mention running for president in 2012.
On Twitter postings Tuesday, Palin said she'll use her farewell speech to share gratefulness for the honor of serving and speak to Alaska's destiny that includes contributions of energy and security to the United States.
Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Palin also is expected to attend picnics in Mat-Su on Friday evening and in Anchorage on Saturday afternoon.
Leighow said the governor's office has been inundated with inquiries from national media outlets about the Fairbanks event.
"It's definitely exciting to have the inauguration here at the park," Pioneer Park manager Jason Avery said. "We've got additional security, and our crews are just making last-minute preparations."
Melissa Stepovich, who works in Palin's Fairbanks office, said she's getting a lot of interest from legislators and other state dignitaries in attending the transition.
"How fortunate is Fairbanks to have this happen here," she said. "It kind of tells you how the governor and the lieutenant governor feel about Fairbanks. They've chosen it, and especially at 50 years of statehood."
Parnell spokeswoman Michelle Toohey said he plans to stay in Fairbanks on Monday, his first official day as governor and meet with local media and community leaders. His first cabinet meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
LOL, that was really lame, you don’t have much to work with obviously.
Yet despite your expert analysis of conservatives the number one candidate for conservatives is Sarah Palin.
Our poll this month showed 81% of conservative Republicans with a favorable opinion of Sarah Palin with 73% having a positive one about Mike Huckabee and 72% doing the same for Newt Gingrich. But for Romney the figure is just 58%.
That fits the same general trend as our June survey. Then 83% viewed Palin favorably to 79% for Huckabee, 77% for Gingrich, and 69% for Romney."
Her negative poll numbers are also quite high. You should anticipate an increase in her negative numbers when her inexperience and resignation are prominently displayed in a rash of television advertising.
Fav/Unfav nationally:
Obama 50/43
Palin 47/45
The Rasmussen daily tracking numbers have Obama unfav at 47 or 48.
Her experience and resignation are already well known. Her numbers have improved since the resignation.
She is doing fantastic in the polls, being number one in favorability among both republicans and the general public, where are the poll numbers on your man?
Since you decided to get on a Palin thread an trash her let’s make sure that your troll like attacks are connected to Eric Cantor.
Eric Cantor was not polled and has not expressed his intentions on the Presidency. He has a 97% ACU lifetime rating. Regardless, he would easily make the best candidate among the projected GOP candidates.
BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Fascinating data here, folks, in the latest Gallup poll that's out today. The headline of the Gallup poll is somewhat misleading. "Romney Edges Palin and Huckabee in Early 2012 GOP Test." The subhead is the real story: "Palin's favorable rating stable after announcing her resignation." So the numbers are this: The candidate most likely to support for the 2012 Republican nomination for president today based on Republicans and Republican-leaning independents: Romney 26, Sarah Palin 21, Huckabee 19, Newt 14, Tim Pawlenty, 3%. Haley Barbour, 2%. However, when you get to the favorable ratings of current leading contenders, you have Sarah Palin at 72% approval among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents; 56% approve of Romney and 59% approve of Huckabee."
"But regardless this cannot be said enough. See, the Gallup poll leads with "Romney Edges Palin 26-21" in, "Who you gonna vote for?" which is three-and-a -half years away. It's irrelevant. Approval numbers: 72% for Palin after this year she's had, and 56% for Romney? " END TRANSCRIPT
Sorry, I don’t know anyone up in the Fairbanks area.
From the article:
There are several picnics that Sarah Palin will attend this coming weekend.
Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Palin also is expected to attend picnics in Mat-Su on Friday evening and in Anchorage on Saturday afternoon.
Sarah will be in Wasilla (Mat-Su area) from 4:30p to 7:30p on Friday and at the park strip in Anchorage from 12p to 3p on Saturday.
I’m about 300 miles and a $400 plane ride from anywhere Sarah is going to be. Wish I could make it but I just bought $2000 worth of plane tickets for the Reno Air Races in September.
Can’t justify a flight to ANC or FAI at this time.
Mat-Su Valley - Home of 600 pound cabbages and million pound pumpkins
Okay, a little hyperbole there
I expect the cabbages will be semi truck size this year, this summer has been the warmest and driest in many years, lots of long sunny days.
I live in Wasilla but I doubt I will be able to go see Sarah, gotta work.
Who is Eric Cantor?
Now we know where you get your views.
Pitiful
Please carry on regardless, for ever.
I am a total supporter.
Let Eric run and if he beats the rest fair and square I will gladly vote for him
I can see your point about BO and his lack of experience but SP is not an idiot and not a liberal. Even if she were POTUS now, do you think she would have proposed 10% of what the current Libtard POTUS has?
BO’s current problems are due to 2 things 1) being a socialist and showing it for all to see 2) arrogance compounding #1 which most libtards have in spades.
What is needed in a POTUS 1) integrity 2) common sense/judgment 3)knowledge- so your own advisors and “loyal opposition” cant screw you with their schemes (maybe this was Bush’s problem)
She has more #1 BY FAR than anyone and she has time to learn more wwhich will then deepen her political judgment;she already has more common sense having lived in the real world herself
Dont worry, SP will not be the nominee if she cant take down Romney & co in debates/ Please get Cantor to run. He would be great option also
OK, but you will have to (sorry!) ELABORATE on EXACTLY why Sarah Palin is impeded (from running for nat'l office) by only having served as gov for 2.5 years. OOPS! I meant, "a meager" 2.5 years.
