WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.
"This still haunts us," Obama said.
Obama called Gates a friend, and said he doesn't know all the facts of the case. Nonetheless, Obama said, anyone would have been angry if treated the way Gates claims police in Cambridge, Mass., treated him. Gates, a Harvard University professor, claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.
"Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof he was in own home," Obama said during a prime-time news conference that otherwise focused on the health care debate.

For someone who admits he doesn’t know all the facts about the case, he sure sounds like he knows all the facts about the case.
No problem - Obama appears to be able to do nothing but insert both feet into his mouth. Unbelievable that this man is POTUS.
I sure thought this was absurd. He says he doesn’t know the facts of the case, yet offers an opinion that reflects the police having been in the wrong. He dosn’t know the facts, but he has a strong opinion anyway.
There is not too much reality between his two ears. He is fully delusional.

I’m the first person to express skepticism in the face of police/public servant testimony, but the story seems to have changed.
There seems to be some discrepancy here: “...claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.” IIRC, he was arrested in the act of forcing the door of a home which the police did not know was his because he REFUSED to show ID. THAT was why they hauled him in.

Not to offer a defense for Obama, but that does make him a thoroughly modern American man.
There are plenty of people offering strong opinions on issues they know noting about. We call them “politicians”, “journalists”, “celebrities”, “liberals”...
He calls himself African American...I always took that for black.
Just what we need now...First get rid of private doctors...then attack the civilian police for being stupid on national TV. This man isn’t playing with a full deck or he said it on purpose to get at “whitey”.

he has a STRONG opinion because the guy is black and it is harvard, which he knows is totally racist... else why did he get in... oh, wait a minute, I forgot that it was muslim money that got him in....hail to the communist.
