Whoa, whoa, whoa!
I’m the first person to express skepticism in the face of police/public servant testimony, but the story seems to have changed.
There seems to be some discrepancy here: “...claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.” IIRC, he was arrested in the act of forcing the door of a home which the police did not know was his because he REFUSED to show ID. THAT was why they hauled him in.
Anybody
Just what we need now...First get rid of private doctors...then attack the civilian police for being stupid on national TV. This man isn’t playing with a full deck or he said it on purpose to get at “whitey”.
Just imagine how pissed he would have been to return home and find his house had been cleaned out in his absence, then learn that his neighbor had seen two guys breaking in but decided not to call police because they were black and that would profiling.
This was a lose-lose situation for the police. If this man was determined to make it a racial thing the ball was in his court. It should help some that one of the officers was black.
This looks to me like a case of employing the old “the best defense is a strong offense” rule to me.
He says he never yelled at the police, but that will be easy enough to confirm based on witnesses. And supposedly there's a picture of him on the porch yelling.
Gates was doing fine until he got attitude that far exceeded what one would call righteous indignation.
Cop who arrested Henry Gates: Im not apologizing

Disorderly conduct. This is an AP account:
Police say the 58-year-old Gates yelled at the officer, accused him of racial bias and refused to calm down after the officer demanded Gates show him identification to prove he lived in the home. Gates denies that he yelled at the officer, other than to repeatedly ask his name and badge number, and says he readily turned over his driver’s license and Harvard ID to prove his residence and identity. Gates said he was “outraged” by the arrest and has demanded an apology. He said he wants to use the experience to help make a documentary about racial profiling in the United States.

You are partially right. However, he did show his ID eventually. The cops started to leave but at this time a crowd had gathered. He followed the cops outside and then started his rant about how a black men were treated in the US, he was trying to stir up trouble with the 7 or 8 people who were present and he wouldn't shut up and let the cops leave. He was then arrested. They acted correctly. It is all in the police report. The guy acted like a jerk from the git go, as you stated he at first refused to show ID and screamed at the cops. Bozo is full of sh** on this one and is showing his hatred for whitey.
