Men on the moon
SUN HERALD ^ | July 20, 2009 | By J.R. WELSH

STENNIS SPACE CENTER — Forty years ago today, millions of Americans huddled in front of television screens to watch two U.S. astronauts walk on the moon, after getting there courtesy of a rocket engine that would become part of South Mississippi history.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to reach the moon’s surface — a feat that, even in these high-tech times, seems incredible.

America listened as Eagle, the Apollo 11 lunar module, settled down on the moon and Armstrong made his announcement: “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

Memories of that late-night event, and the many months leading up to it, are forever burned into the brains of South Mississippians who were part of the drama.

ut even as they spend part of today remembering, Stennis faces a new challenge. Crews are now building a new A-3 test stand. It towers 300 feet high, and will test the new J-2X engine to be used in the Constellation Program.

Constellation will take Americans back to the moon and possibly beyond, NASA says. And Jeanne Kellar has delayed her retirement from Stennis to be a part of the new moon effort.

For some, postponing retirement would be a major decision. But for Kellar, “It was no decision at all,” she said. And she still observes at least one engine test each year.

“I still get goose bumps,” she said.

I gotta wonder if the group saying we faked the landings are not just your usual liberal marxist scum wanting to denigrate the achievements of USA’s past...

No doubt at the thought of squandering all that taxpayer money. Government work is the best work in the world. You get to spend freely what other people worked for and NEVER EVER have to admit when you do anything wrong.

It’s not a cloth flag. Its foil, and thus appears to be waving.

I was in Huntsville where the rocketry for the landing was developed. Its what happened after that that ruined space exploration.

Nixon gave the Russians our docking technology so that astronauts could kiss in space. A PR move. Johnson moved most programs out of Huntsville because the county went for Goldwater. Money that could have been used to establish a base on the moon to be a launch pad into space was used for the Shuttle and Space Station more PR. The big booster guys who wanted a moon base were phased out and the only program of any significance in Huntsville was the Hubble.

Now the funds for space are used to buy votes. To bad someone with vision like Kennedy has been missing the past forty years.

The MythBusters show debunked all the conspiracy theories regarding the moon landing. About the flag, they put one in a vacuum chamber that simulated the environment on the moon. They set up a rig to twist the flagpole, as the astronauts had done to plant the flag. Due to the lack of air friction, the flag continued to sway back and forth (wave) for much longer than it would have in Earth’s atmosphere. They performed the same experiment outside of the vacuum chamber to illustrate how much longer the flag waves in the vacuum.

We watched the landing at my older sister’s house, where we were having a party for my Daddy. He was so excited about it happening on his birthday!
