Israeli navy in Suez Canal prepares for potential attack on Iran

Two Israeli missile class warships have sailed through the Suez Canal ten days after a submarine capable of launching a nuclear missile strike, in preparation for a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The deployment into the Red Sea, confirmed by Israeli officials, was a clear signal that Israel was able to put its strike force within range of Iran at short notice. It came before long-range exercises by the Israeli air force in America later this month and the test of a missile defence shield at a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean.

Irrelevant. Iran arms the groups who do the killing. The intent is what matters. An Iranian nuke will have only one purpose - to wipe Israel off the map, therefore their nukes would be offensive in nature as opposed to defensive, like Israel's.

Shi’ites do in fact do suicide bombing. Have a look at Hezbollah. Also the Iranian “martyrs” who blew themselves up in the Iraq-Iran war were Shi’ites. That was the first time suicide bombing became used as a wartime tactic...by the SHI’ITES.

And yes there are Sunnis in Iran. They are a minority. There is a Sunni terrorist group called Jundallah with ties to al-Qaida made up of Iranian Baluchis.

Because Iran is signatory to the non proliferation treaty and is currently in material breach of its obligations. Iran is currently under UN sanctions for violating the treaty.

That’s just one reason, but I am sure you have great respect for international law, treaty obligations, international consensus, world bodies, world opinion, and non proliferation.

Israel is not signatory to the treaty and is not in violation and any international law.

It’s only a matter of time. Rumor has it that Egypt is cooperating, and Saudi Arabia has given Israel a Red Sea base from which to launch an attack, and overflight rights over Saudi territory into the Persian Gulf. This would allow Israel to avoid having to ask Obama for overflight permission in Iraq — which he would never grant. This will get interesting...

Good thin Obama bowed in homage to the Sunni Saudi king. That'll show those Shiite Persians who's side we're on!

I read the article (very interesting, BTW), but it doesn’t explain *why* the only windows are July 21-24 and August 6-8. Sure, the author cites “political, geopolitical, military preparedness, and climatic conditions” for such windows, but doesn’t give a clue why the attack couldn’t be launched, say, in mid-August instead.

Good luck with that, but the Israelis should expect losses with their Ra'ams and Sufas falling prey to Iranian SA-15s and SA-20s, lethal double digit SAMs.

Good point. However, I think that Israel will strike first with missiles and that their primary goal will be to take out Iran's Air Force and missile defense systems that could pose a threat to Israeli jets arriving about 10 minutes later.

I'm sure it's just a huge coincidence.

I doubt that Israel will be able to launch an airstrike against Iran that hits more than a handful of targets. If Israel tells the Saudis the exact date for the overflights, that information will wind up in the other Arab capitals lickety-split. However, the Israelis must know this, and will choose their target/s carefully.

I think before, during, or after the Syrian raid the Israelis had people on the ground for samples of the terrain and for a look-see, and got them out no problems. The possibility of a group of commandos hitting some targets and getting out isn't beyond the realm of possibility (Entebbe was a greater distance all those years ago), but unless they are a hit squad to erase the nuke scientists (and/or Khamanei et al), it's hard to imagine what target such a commando raid would attack.
