Papal Message Seeks "Global Authority" for Economy
Reuters ^ | July 7, 2009 | Phillip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.

The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.

Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.

The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.

Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

OK, let's start with a monstrously huge tax on the Vatican and how about a popular Papal elections? Maybe Obama or Bill Clinton could win that one. ;-)

The Pope should re-read the words of Jesus about what belongs to God and what belongs to Caesar- and get out of the business of advocating for Caesar.

Bingo!

This document isn’t infallible.
As a Catholic, I ignore anything the Church says about economics. JPII was probably the most or only capitalistic Pope...

He’s wrong...again.

He needs to stick to moral/ethical issues—there is more than enough in that wormy can to deal with without getting into one world economics.

sigh...

he is out of his realm and should just stay out of this.

it is not in his expertise and lessens his credibility on what he does have expertise with....

Very naive. Very naive. He has let his concern for humans outweigh what he ought to know of human nature.

There is no global authority that can, or will be, moral.

True. Looks like he neeeds to go back and take a closer look at what happened when the Catholic Church tried their hand at ruling the world.

I’m Roman Catholic and agree on nearly all of the church’s teachings. However he is DEAD wrong on this.

God gave us all FREEWILL to make choices.

Regarding capitalism:
1) some will create wealth that will benefit mankind,
2) some will obtain wealth out of greed
3) some will ENVY and COVET what others have earned

...and God will be the final judge with what one does with their wealth

The Catholic Church was established by Christ. The Roman Government merely recognized it as the faith Christ established and declared it the faith of the empire. The Catholic Church already existed for 350 years by that point.

Give a man a fish, you feed him for the day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

What the Pope needs to teach:

Let the deadbeats get off their backsides and stop begging for handouts.

My respect for this pope just dropped a number of pegs. It is one thing to castigate greed, as “the love of money is the root of all evil.” However, the Bible teaches us that as individuals we are to freely and lovingly give of our gifts to those less fortunate. To force us to submit to tyrants (and I would point out to the pope that many of them are distinctly non-Christian), and to be forcibly separated from the fruits of our labor, is decidedly un-Christian. It has no basis in Biblical teaching. Not in the Bible I’ve read, anyway.

As I posted on another thread.....how many of you have actually read the encyclical?

But then again maybe reading it would be too great of a strain and destroy you well construction views and prejudices.

Who here has actually read the Pope’s encyclical, and not just what Reuters says the Pope said? Anyone? Anyone?

I'm not. If it is as it is being reported, it is final collusion of communism that is taught in seminaries and preached from the pulpit joining forces with the secular communists.

A large portion of the Christian churches was taken over through the seminaries and theological programs in academe at about the same time the statists took over the other programs.

"baffled"

It's simple, the Pope is an economic ignoramus. He means well, but so many disastrous events have occurred because some people were "meant well".
