Anyone who previously doubted Sarah Palin's celebrity status need no longer doubt. The surprise announcement of her decision to resign the Alaska governorship effective July 26 -- fully 18 months before the end of her first term -- generated a reaction nearly powerful enough to bump Michael Jackson's funeral from the headlines.
In addition to the usual sources of political news, People magazine weighed in with a report quoting gubernatorial father-in-law Jim Palin's reaction: "Wow. We had no idea it was coming." The elder Palin reported that "Sarah and Todd had thought it through," but their planning had been unreported -- and their decision clearly unexpected -- by Palin-haters in both parties, who rushed to interpret Friday's resignation in light of their own prejudices.
Perhaps the most deranged reaction was the rumor -- immediately, officially and emphatically denied -- that Palin was the target of an FBI investigation. Without merit of evidence, logic or any on-the-record source, this rumor quickly escalated into a frenzy of baseless speculation reminiscent of the left-wing blogosphere's mid-2006 fantasies of "Fitzmas," when the indictment of Karl Rove by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was regarded as an accomplished fact.
The political sources and political purposes of the Palin investigation rumor were as obvious as the rumor's lack of any factual basis, as Palin's attorney made clear in his rebuttal.........

“When you have so many establishment types inside-the-Beltway, elite, establishment types (Republican, Democrat, it doesnt matter) just so eager to destroy this woman, it means theyre still scared to death of her. That, to me, is the bottom line.” -Rush ( Free Audio: http://www.dat-e-baseonline.com/front/a.asp?arg=8F7D995F927D75646770737C628B73798C6A7273817D78)

I will be casting my vote for Sarah Palin in 2012.
This feels almost eeriely like those moments in between the day McCain picked her and that awesome speech she gave at the Republican National Convention.
The media was doubting her. Bill OReilly was saying she had little credibility. Peggy Noonan was cursing. The media was underestimating her.
Isnt it ironic. Sarah is the most popular figure in America right now. She is several thousand miles from Washington, D.C. As far away from the District of Columbia as you can possibly get. and she is no longer going to be in government. yet it feels like she is closer to the White House than any Republican on the planet. fitting for our times
you could say this about politics..
As Tim McCarver (MLB Fox Broadcaster, former catcher) once said about baseball. “it’s a strange game”
The author of this article I posted has a similar take...
The punditocracy can't predict Palin because she shares neither their perspective nor their assumptions. Her ascent to political stardom has been treated as a fluke by most of the GOP establishment for the simple reason that she doesn't slavishly follow the standard script of Republican politicians. Of course, in recent years this script usually has ended with "
and then the Democrats won," suggesting the need for a re-write.
Many of the political and media elite who are so smug in their critique of Sara Palin should go back and study the life and career of our seventh president, Andrew Jackson. There are remarkable parallels, both in the individuals themselves, the circumstance existent in the country including the state of the political parties. The elite consider their opponents education, background, religion, and family all fair game now as in General Jacksons time. (Jackson was quoted as saying he would forgive those who attacked him but would never forgive those who attacked his wife. I suspect Governor Palin may feel the same about those who attack her children.) They share a history of humble origins, life on the frontier and lack of elite education. Their public service is characterized by conflict with the establishment and accomplishment rather than by length of service and endorsement by the powerful. Vilification by the establishment and adoration by the common people are shared traits.

“Vilification by the establishment and adoration by the common people...”
This is the key to her success. They are throwing her into the brier patch...so to speak.
rather than by length of service and endorsement by the powerful
i.e. the limp wristed, Louie the XiV, “let them eat cake” out of touch, over educated, no common sense, socialistic egomanics we have in government today.
I like Governor Sarah Palin, but I cannot help but think that this resignation raises concerns about her executive ability. She cites the frivolous ethics charges as the reason to step down, but she also reminds us that she championed these ethics laws that have hurt her and the state of Alaska. Is it not the responsibility of a voter to evaluate the record, and given the problems these ethics laws have caused, have not these ethics laws championed by Sarah herself demonstrate that they should have not been so hastily enacted?
Of the fifteen actually recorded ethics charges, ALL FIFTEEN WERE THROWN OUT! But it takes time and money to fight them, even if they are frivolous. There IS no way to stop frivolous law suits, especially without a strong judge.
Sarah knows what she is doing. It is up to us to stand by and see if she needs help in the future.
We have a national treasure up there in Alaska, worth protecting, and most Alaskans know it.
She’s got my support!

There are two aspects of Governor Palin's decision to resign now, which have not been competently discussed, or discussed at all, in the main stream media. One is based on the map, the other is based in American political history.
See #16 for link....
#37 there is an eye-opener!!!
Its depressing how many here rush to make fools of themselves, trying to put a reverse spin on this clear-headed power move by Sarah.
In short, you are describing “elitists”.
That’s what this is about, in the earthly realm - the elitists vs the individualists.
There is a higher battle going on as well, but this earthly elitist/individualist battle is a shadow of it.
