They call her Neda, which means 'voice' in Farsi, and her death has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian rebellion.
The pretty teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime.
Her quick and brutal death in the arms of her howling father was captured on close-up video, posted to Facebook and sent to computer screens across the world.
"Neda you broke my heart, too young to die," was one of a flood of messages on Twitter.
"RIP Neda, the world cries seeing your last breath," read another. "Neda is everyone's sister, everyone's daughter, everyone's voice for freedom," said a third.
Iconic posters of her dead face, open-eyed and bloody, were carried by demonstrators in Los Angeles and New York City within hours.
The graphic video was originally posted to Facebook by an Iranian expatriate in Holland who said it was sent to him by a friend in Tehran, a doctor who tried to save the girl.
The expat said her name was Neda Soltani, a 16-year-old philosophy student.
The outpouring of messages on Twitter included a new account dedicated solely to insisting the video was fake. That poster was roundly shouted down as a tool of the Iranian regime.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
The law of unintended consequences carries a lot of weight.
Get over yourself. I violated an unwritten rule? pfft...
I could give a rip what you do or do not what to see. Irani’s fighting for a fair vote is a preview of what is coming to an arena near you ... like “seeing” it or not.
Yeah, isn't it.
All in the VERY MOMENT fatass blocked the camera.
Forget the blood for a moment and watch her face and her eyes frame by frame. It is not the look of someone acting or pretending.
Maybe, since it is Sunday in the Western World, Neda's death has been slow to build into a news cycle.
CNN has been more than slow on the switch to report on the Iran crisis ... meanwhile 0 has been grillin’, chillin’, jacknjillin’, and Bo diddlin’ ...
Which O photo op will MSM slobber over in the mornin’?
That image has been retouched.
I have been going back and forth on this video. I certainly believe the events could happen in Iran today, but I also really have doubts about the veracity of this particular video. I definitely lean towards this video being fake.
But why would government forces shoot this woman? Is she an activist?
When she first lays back, it looks like she may have a cell phone in her left hand. There is nothing in her right hand. Neither of her hands nor her father’s hands can been seen pouring blood into her mouth. She starts bleeding from the mouth then her nose. If it’s fake, it’s amazing how, without blinking, she could force fake blood out of her nostrils with out blowing bubble.
“no burka...”
Seriously? I didn’t think Iran required it.
It's genuine. Three cell phone cams, same scene.
I also read on several posts that she was born in 1982, which would make her 27 years old. She was a philosophy student. This really disturbs me.
There's nothing worse than discounting the sacrifices and suffering of others. Unless you have proof it is fake just keep your opinion to yourself, i.e., "shutup". You probably think the holocaust was fake too. Get some help.
I hardly doubt RummyChick discounts the sacrifices and suffering of others. Simple questions have been raised about this particular video. And insinuating RummyChick is a holocaust-denier is childishness.
It is disposative. Look at the large smear of blood on the street, on her left leg, all along the throat, and the horrifying glimpse of the blob of blood briefly coursing down her face. No motion, no reflex, NO movement of arms or legs (dead weight).
Prayers up.
To scare the crap out of the crowd and get them to go home. It's called terror. Axis of evil and all that. This is the 20th century way of keeping people under control. They had to import these thugs from Lebanon, Syria, and "Palestine". Getting the scenes on video, on the web in less than a minute via secure servers is the monkey wrench in that machine.
If you watch the videos carefully, at the very least her left leg moves as well as her right arm.
