Let Dave and Todd work things out
The Dalton Daily Citizen ^ | June 13, 2009 | The Editors

David Letterman is scornful of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, which is certainly his right. That he continues to use the bully pulpit of his late-night talk show to crack wise about the former vice presidential contender is acceptable also, if not exactly cutting edge comedy.

Clearly a public figure, Palin is fair game.

But Letterman went beyond the pale with his recent jokes about Palin’s daughter being “knocked up” by a New York Yankee player while attending a recent game.

Letterman claimed to be referring to Palin’s 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, who had a child out of wedlock. However, Bristol wasn’t at the ballpark that day. Her 14-year-old daughter was. Logically, that makes her the focus of the wisecrack, which would be truly disturbing.

Either way, Letterman’s attempt at humor strikes us as unnecessarily and unacceptably nasty. Neither of the Palin daughters were fit targets for that kind of material.

So, what now?

We’d like to see the matter dealt with the old Scots-Irish way.

With Father’s Day coming up next Sunday, how about the two dads, Letterman and Todd Palin, having a private, man-to-man meeting in some quiet, out-of-the-way place to discuss the matter. Todd strikes us as the kind of dad who would cut to the point quickly, not wasting much of Letterman’s valuable time.

The men would meet, make their points and then Letterman’s assistants could pick him up and carry him back to the limo.

Matter closed.

Your remarks (both) are spot on and need repeating.

“re: I wish Bush had stood up and defended himself when the liberals smeared him and slammed him for 8 years)))”

“Not only that, but I wish he’d stood up for his fellow conservatives instead of treating us like poor white trash that he was ashamed of.”

When someone does not strike back in defense, the offense wins by default. Thanks to GWB for not fighting back, we Conservatives have to start out in the hole building and defending Conservatism up to its proper place of dominance. Thanks a lot Bush Family

promote Craig Ferguson

I like Craig Furguson. He recently became a US citizen.

He is a real man, and backed off of the Britney Spears jokes because he thought it was sick. He would make a good replacement for Letterman.

May I ask you men, one more time, what the looks of David Letterman’s wife has ANYTHING FREAKING THING TO DO WITH ANYTHING.

I agree. The poor woman probably has to deal with that jerk on a daily basis. I think it's not fair to belittle her looks, if she hasn't opened her mouth on the subject.

It doesn’t “have to be dealt with” now or ever. It’s a silly distraction that should be studiously ignored. If conservatives continue to allow themselves to be distracted by nonsense like this, we’ll not only have Obama as President for a second term, but also someone as far left or even further left after his 8 years are up.

Letterman doesn’t matter. Palin doesn’t matter. Right now, Iran is descending into violent political and social chaos while either being very close to, or already having nuclear weapons. And North Korea is making credible threats to expand their fledgling nuclear weapons inventory using the plutonium supply which they already have — and the UN is sitting around yakking about “sanctions” in response. And our economy is in a shambles, and the Democrat-dominated government is taking advantage of that to undertake the biggest expansion of the federal government since the “New Deal”.

Todd isn’t going to punch Letterman out, and he’d be a fool to entertain the idea.

And Sarah isn't going to shoot Letterman.

Moving past the fantasies, I think it would be perfectly OK for Sarah to say that she wants Letterman fired. He deserves to be fired. His non-joke crossed the line, and his non-apology showed that he intends to continue in the same vein unless he is stopped.

My first thought too, and I would!

I think that is the obvious, sensible play. Joking about rape is wrong, nobody can argue against that. Letterman hasn’t apologized and it is clear he doesn’t intend to. His job should therefore be forfeit, and Sarah ought to insist on it.

Old Andrew Jackson never had a daughter. But several men who made derogatory comments about his wife wound up seriously dead.

Bush maintained the dignity which is appropriate for a President. Complaining about the crude antics of entertainers is not an appropriate topic for anyone who expects to be taken seriously about the truly weighty issues in the world. On some serious issues, Bush would have done well to be a little more forceful, but he was quite right not to allow himself to be dragged into stupid squabbles.

His handling of Rathergate was flat-out brilliant. Neither he nor his spokespeople uttered a word in his defense after CBS put out the phony memos and various other parties loudly challenged their authenticity. They obviously knew the memos were phony but kept their mouths firmly shut. CBS took the bait — CBS would have backtracked *much* sooner if Bush or a White House spokesperson had issued a clear statement that they believed the memos to be phony, but CBS imagined that the lack of a statement from the White House meant that Bush was genuinely concerned that the memos were real. Bush gave CBS and Rather and Mary Mapes an unlimited supply of rope, and the confidence to use it, just by keeping quiet.

Could not have said it better myself. It does seem like ole’ Dave likes to hit below the belt. He knows if you hit back, it won’t hurt, because Dave has nothing below his belt.

I can’t argue with your thoughts. Also, I can’t forget that Letterman is a creature of CBS, the Dan Rather network.

IMO Letterman was funny when he was following Carson on NBC, and at first when he started at CBS. Even after Viacom took over CBS, he did funny bits lambasting Sumner Redstone and Les Moonves at first—but that material was later replaced by telephone skits where Letterman and Moonves played at being buddy-buddy, and the rest of his “jokes” IMO took a distinctly more leftist slant. The way I saw it, Viacom pulled Letterman’s leash, and he toed the corporate political line. I stopped watching Dave back then—figuring that CBS was using their late night show just as they use the news division—to spread propaganda whenever possible. I suspect that Letterman just takes their money, and for the amount they pay him, happily does their bidding.

"Todd really doesn’t have this option, because he’s young and strong and Dirty Old Letterman is a feeble relic. One punch from Todd, and Letterman’s bones would turn to dust. An honorable guy can’t beat up someone sick and elderly."

What Todd SHOULD do is take Dave out and show him the route of the Iron Dog race. :o)

I’d like to see pictures of all your wives.

No problem. Mine is beautiful, on the inside and the outside, Send your email address, I'll send you a picture (can't send pics via Freeper mail).

As for Letterman, he has become increasingly bitter and angry since he got embroiled with Ms Lasko, it may be a coincidence, but it maybe not..

I really do wish we could settle it the old fashion way. Unfort’, if Todd laid a hand on Letterman, it’d be all over for him, and Sarah would be painted as having a violent, disturbed husband who does the same to his family.

I wish it were like the old days where men would ‘step outside,’ settle the matter. I KNOW Dave would be on his butt!

It is for that reason that we should ask not just for Letterman’s resignation, but also his writers.
