If it exploded, it happened 15 years ago.

No worries for a Gamma Ray burst though, yes?

It was the size of Jupiter’s orbit, but has reduced by 15%... I’m guessing that would put it about the size of Mars’s orbit (slightly bigger).

Of course that’s just an off-the-cuff-guess.

So.... We've got 600 years +/- the time it takes from now until it implodes(has imploded/may implode) to make sure we're not in the way.

This actually has me worried. The work on North Central Expressway through Dallas won't be complete.

This is a red SUPERgiant by the way, it will make Supernova 1054 pale by comparison. SN1054 could be seen during the daytime and cast shadows at night.

Betelgeuse, whose name derives from Arabic, is easily visible in the constellation Orion. It gave Michael Keaton's character his name in the movie "Beetlejuice" and was the home system of Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Very informative, but when did fictional characters and "home systems" become the stuff of news?

It means “arm pit” in Arabic since that’s where it is in Orion. If it becomes a Gamma ray burster and if it’s pointed our way, then even Obama will seem like chump change compared to what that would do!

"As the iron fuel runs out, it may explode into a supernova, blasting newly created elements out into the universe and leaving behind a small, incredibly dense neutron star.

All the heavier elements in the universe — including all the oxygen, carbon and iron in your own body — were created in such a way."

Two ways to read that... either we are made up of star dust or we are just a bunch of nuclear waste. ;-)

This star has actually been imaged by the Hubble space telescope.

I hope it's axis of rotation is not pointed our way!

I have become a super duper cynic. I hate it. I used to a much nicer person.

The media is hell bent on creating fear. There must be some payback...(like continued readership of junk reporting???) like trying to see how we will be destroyed next.

Gee there was Legionaries, Sars, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Coffee (bad), Eggs (bad), the Ice age of the 1970’s, the global warming of 2009.

Now a planet “may” crash into us.

Go away media...I think I'll ride my bike with no helmet. I may really rebel..and not buckle my seatbelt.

<nitpick>

Charles Townes, who won the 1964 Nobel Prize for inventing the laser.

Actually, the laser was invented by Ted Maiman in 1960. Townes won the Nobel Prize for his work that laid the theoretical groundwork for the laser and maser.
