Sessions: Sotomayor filibuster not "in the works"
Politico ^ | 5/27/09 | Glenn Thrush

Posted on 05/27/2009 9:08:35 AM PDT by bdeaner

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, is saying for the first time that he thinks the GOP won't push for a filibuster on Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to succeed David Souter on the Supreme Court.

"The nominee has serious problems," Sessions said on CNN Wednesday morning. "But I would think that we would all have a good hearing, take our time and do it right. And then the senators cast their vote up or down based on whether or not they think this is the kind of judge that should be on the court. ... I don't sense a filibuster in the works."

Sessions said it was still possible he could support Sotomayor, who has drawn serious flak from conservative groups.

I think the problem is they like them way too much and say or doing whatever they feel necessary to keep the best job they ever had.

No loss, their retirement pension "ain't" too shabby either.

Do they have the numbers for a filibuster?

You are right—they do need 1 Repub to get out of committee. The problem is both Hatch and Graham are on the committee and will alomst definitely push her through.

For some of you Newbies who are uneducated, Senator Sessions led the successful fight against Amnesty for illegal aliens.

When he tells you that he’s not filibustering, you’d better believe that his reasons are better than your knee-jerk reactions.

For instance, he sees that Sotomayor’s replacement, if she is defeated, is even worse.

Sotomayor also upheld Reagan and Bush’s Mexico City policy against abortion.

All things considered, 0bama could hit us with a worse Justice if he wants.

You are exactly right, it won't work and it will just backfire on the GOP but during the nomination hearing they need to force her or her supporters to explain why her “white male” comments weren't racist and how she expects to get along with the rest of the USSC since 60% of her cases have been overturned?
I hope she says that the rest of the USSC have been wrong on all those decisions. It will backfire on her, very quickly.

If by some miracle we were successful in shooting down this nomination who would be the next in line on Obama’s list? Nobody any better, I can tell you that. As they say...elections have consequences and this is one helluva nasty consequence.

This is a battle you pick, even if it is hopeless. Ask Harriet Meier about that.

NEVER EVER EVER GIVE UP.

That's my point. After Bush was forced to drop Meirs he came back with a fantastic choice ( for us). If Obama drops Sotomayor do you think he'll come back with anyone we'll like any better?

No need to uselessly filibuster, just expose all the aspects of this affirmative action figure’s anti-Constitutional rulings and her 60% failure rate upon SCOTUS review of her rulings and repeatedly read into the Senate confirmation hearings the many racist, liberal crap she’s uttered on the record. THEN ties this unqualified, anti-Constitutionalist to the entire democrap party. Even the enemedia would be feckless in spinning that exposure.

true, but they have to show us that they’re actually fighting. It costs the GOP nothing to put up a spirited, if doomed, battle against Sotomayore.

Surrendering from the get-go is not the conservative way.

Bingo. Keep the powder dry this time

The next one is going to be much worse. In particular if the Dems pick up numbers in 2010

“0bama could hit us with a worse Justice if he wants.”

It doesn’t matter. Fact is, they’d all be as bad as each other. They’d all vote the solid leftist activist line.

You FIGHT these people. You don’t let your FIGHT be taken by the retarded republican leadership and their protestations that they know what they’re doing. They have screwed up enough already. They need a pointy stick up their butt constantly to remind them what people want. He’ll doubtless do whatever he does anyway, and we’d need democrats to vote for filibuster also, yada-yada. It doesn’t matter. Good stuff happens when they get the pointy stick. Like Roberts. I am a strong believer in the positive power of the pointy stick.

Really, what’s the difference btw white justices who hate their own race and a hispanic justice that hates whites besides a small bit of melanin?

The next one is going to be much worse. In particular if the Dems pick up numbers in 2010

And if it's, say, Thomas or Scalia being replaced, instead of Ginsburg or Stevens.

Thank God there are some THINKING FReepers in the bunch. Sotomayor will push Kennedy further right with her temperament and that’s what we need right now.

Exactly.

We must not allow a Thomas or Scalia replacement to be one inch to the left of those 2 distinguished gentlemen. I expect a WW3 like hearing if O attempts to move the court left at all

From everything I am seeing, that is not the case here.

Make her sweat, make the hearings difficult, vote against her and quickly move on. This is a lose-lose situation

pick your battles for the republicans is ALWAYS having no spine. The RINO’s have bene using that excuse so lnog that it means the same thing that “Maybe” meant from my parents wehn I was 7 years old. In other words ... “not a snowballs chance in Hell

How about some dirtbag with an R behind his name stand up ans surprise those of us that are conservatives for a change ... Never happen ... there aren’t any “R’s” with spines or leadership abilities. they have proved it over and over and over in the last 10 years

You aren’t clever enough to know when to pick and choose your battles.

That’s why you’re not a leader.
