Sotomayor's Socialist Yearbook Quote

I'm slightly surprised that the White House press office gave out this image, from her 1976 Princeton yearbook, in which she quotes Norman Thomas.
Norman Thomas was, of course, the leading American Socialist politician of the 20th century. Perhaps they figured it would come out eventually so they wanted to be able to say, "That's old news. We thought it was so inconsequential, we mentioned it ourselves." Or perhaps they felt that substantively didn't matter; Norman Thomas was a pretty mainstream and respected figure, as socialists went. And his quote is universal. Or perhaps they didn't notice.

That quote doesn’t seem very earthshaking.

The really sad thing is that if we are successful in exposing this lady for what she is and she doesn't get confirmed...there is a long line of people just like her for Obama to choose...which he will.
Who among the conservative ranks in the Senate have the guts to oppose nominee after nominee with the MSM hammering away day and night? God bless us.

I doubt that has a lot of smoking-gun potential. The quote itself isn’t explicitly socialist in nature, and she’ll claim that it was meant in a general, optimistic sort of little-engine-that-could way. She might even claim she didn’t know who Norman Thomas was and was just drawn to the quote when she read it.

A mild quote, but still -- if you have to choose anyone at all, why choose to quote a socialist?
Of course, Obama's yearbook entry quoted William Ayers, so ...

A mild quote, but still -- if you have to choose anyone at all, why choose to quote a socialist? So, was she supposed to run a security check on the man and get clearance before she quoted him?
By the same token, no conservative should be allowed to quote George Orwell, who was likewise a socialist.
The content of any given quote is of far greater import than the source of the quote (even supposing that it was known).

I think you’re right about the significance. It’s that she chose Thomas (grandfather of journalist Evan Thomas, I believe) at all from a universe of people from whom to quote.

Sometimes the quotation itself is worthwhile. Sometimes it can be used ironically. More than a few of us loved singing "The times they are a changing'" in 1980 and 1994. Many a conservative quotes the execrable Voltaire's "The perfect is the enemy of the good" and a lot of decent people have fun saying "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" from Nietszche.

Would be cool if someone could compile a lexicon of quotes attributed by this radical for publication prior to her hearings.
We certainly cannot count on congress to dig this stuff up,
so sounds like we need to do their job for them like we do it for the press.

Orwell was different. Yes, he was a committed socialist, but he was a thinker and modified his views throughout his lifetime. He also hated communism with a passion. And he was British patriot who whole-heartedly supported his country in WWII.
