Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears is on a short list of candidates to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, according to media reports. Souter reportedly will step down in June.
Sears, who will also step down in June, has served on the states highest court since 1992. The first woman and youngest justice in the courts history, she was also its first African-American female chief justice. Sears has kept her plans for her retirement private, although she has hinted at wanting a larger public role.
Earlier this year Sears was announced as a finalist for Dean of the University Maryland School of Law. She later removed herself from contention, saying she wanted to seek other opportunities.
Sears has been mentioned as a possible choice for President Barack Obama since before he won the election in 2008. She has been reluctant to discuss her future. Georgia Supreme Court spokesperson Jane Hansen said this week Sears was not talking to the media.
Chief Justice Sears really believes it would be inappropriate to talk about whatever may be going on, so she is not going to comment, Hansen said.
Sears did speak with Southern Voice during the For Childrens Sake: Get Married, Stay Married, conference, which she helped to organize in November. She described herself as a moderate-progressive type person in a wide-ranging interview where she talked about her frustration with the media and hinted about her future.

Well, at least she’s not a lot younger.
No doubt, in the end, she’ll be a Ginsburg liberal.
Clean is good.
53. Born June 13, 1955
and “Ruth” as in Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Thanks!
We’ll never get another Thomas. But, someone to the center of Hilary would be a nice surprise.
Heck, I’d takes my chances with Bill C.
I imagine she must be a lesbo.
Am i right?
I agree with her take on marriage, and salute her for taking on the charge to get the number of marrieds back up. Even though Blacks are clearly a problem in this area, Whites are joining in more than we should be happy about.
You know folks, I’m surprised I might agree with even one thing an Obama appointee might believe.
My take on it is that if Obama hears about her stance on marriage, she may not get nominated after all. LOL
His ‘crew’ would probably see that as a negative.
I haven’t heard that one. She was married for 20 years.
Sadly, white conservatives cannot seem to get these same groups to cross over and vote with their beliefs and interests.
100% of the ones I know voted Obama.
If Sears is pro-marriage, and liberal on all else, she'd be the best pick we'll see out of this administration. Maybe she'll even be an anti-Souter...I know I am dreaming.
I’m hoping that she’s secretly pro-life, but that may be too much to hope for.
How dare you axe?
Cough.
I expect Obama to cross us 95 times out of 100, but he may screw up once in a while and actually do something we like.
It would be a big surprise, but if he picked a decent person for the court, I’d be happy as a pig in mud.
Ditto, and if you’ve read the news lately he appears to the Left as Bush-lite.
I love it when they turn on their own. His spin machine will be working overtime to clean his diaper.
The problem with the left, is that they are so stupid, they don’t even realize it when they’ve got it good.
Look at this guy. Look what he’s doing. Can you fathom how dumb you’d have to be, not to think he was far enough to the left?
He tells me he's a communist and wants that kind of government. He voted for Obama.
Apparently, there is no limit to how dumb you can be on the Left.
Is there doubt in anyone's mind here that the USSC will be packed by The Messiah and the Lib's with those who WILL RULE THAT REPARATIONS ARE CONSTITUTIONAL?
The Messiah is a lock to push through Reparations, so whitey can be further penalized for working and getting his money to the "rightfull owners".....
