Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears is on a short list of candidates to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, according to media reports. Souter reportedly will step down in June.
Sears, who will also step down in June, has served on the states highest court since 1992. The first woman and youngest justice in the courts history, she was also its first African-American female chief justice. Sears has kept her plans for her retirement private, although she has hinted at wanting a larger public role.
Earlier this year Sears was announced as a finalist for Dean of the University Maryland School of Law. She later removed herself from contention, saying she wanted to seek other opportunities.
Sears has been mentioned as a possible choice for President Barack Obama since before he won the election in 2008. She has been reluctant to discuss her future. Georgia Supreme Court spokesperson Jane Hansen said this week Sears was not talking to the media.
Chief Justice Sears really believes it would be inappropriate to talk about whatever may be going on, so she is not going to comment, Hansen said.
Sears did speak with Southern Voice during the For Childrens Sake: Get Married, Stay Married, conference, which she helped to organize in November. She described herself as a moderate-progressive type person in a wide-ranging interview where she talked about her frustration with the media and hinted about her future.

I don’t know a great deal about Sears, whose chances appear to be increasing. She was appointed to the state Supreme Court by Zell Miller, whichi is a hopeful sign.
Input by Georgia Freepers would be helpful.
It's a three-pointer and it doesn't matter on knowledge of the law OR fairness; whoever The Messiah puts up will be approved by the Democrats. There is no stopping the rape of the Republic now.
Yes,as RATS go Governor Miller wasn't particularly odious. But remember that Souter....that "confirmed bachelor"...was nominated by the senior President Bush.
IMO,the fact that Hussein likes her is a very,*very* ominous sign.
So is the ‘O’ trying to turn the Capital into the Nutty Nagin Capital? Next thing you know he’ll appoint EX-Congresswoman Cynthia MacKinney to a prominent position.
She described herself as a moderate-progressive type person ...............
And I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that we'll learn that she's also Jewish, lesbian and the daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter of slaves *and* concentration camp victims.
Well, Sears is a good ole American name. Her ancestors probably served on the Sears & Roebuck plantation. Honor tradition and vote her in, I say.
There's that dangerous codeword for a loony left Socialist/Marxist liberal.. "progressive."
What about Hillary? Her performance as SoS has been lackluster at best. If she can’t be President, Supreme Court Justice is the next best thing. I’m sure Bill would approve.
"Moderate-progressive",no doubt, means that she's uncertain about the wisdom of Americans being allowed to marry animals and is opposed to the taking,by eminent domain,of the private property of any Mercedes Maoist located on Martha's Vineyard or Malibu.
Army brat. Born in Heidleburg, Germany. Father was career military, apparently retired as a Colonel. Law degrees from Emory and University of Virginia, which would be a nice break from all those Ivies. We’ll see what turns up, but my first impression is that this woman is no radical, and is several cuts above most of the names that have floated around so far.
Black, liberal, female...geez all she needs is to be gay and she’s a cinch!!!
Ga. Supreme Court Sponsors Get Married, Stay Married Billboards
Note: Leah Sears has been going to conferences sponsored by the Institute for American Values, a group that share many values with the Dr. Morse's Ruth Institute.

A Georgia Supreme Court commission is so concerned about the impact of broken families that it is sponsoring a dozen billboards throughout the state with the message Get Married, Stay Married.
Georgia Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears told the Fulton County Daily Report that she hopes the billboards will help bring down divorce and crime rates, and push fathers to stay involved in their childrens lives.
"It's our job to say to the legislature, and to the executive, 'We see and notice this,' " she told the publication. We do more than just read cases. We see a lot of human devastation. It's my job to speak out."
Sears is promoting intact families despite her own divorce after 20 years of marriage, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Its politically incorrect to say marriage has benefits, she said. Lets not be afraid to say marriage is a good thing.
How old is she?
53 and German born to a U.S. Army Col.
See how she pronounces ask.
