Incumbent Senator Arlen Specter trails former Congressman Pat Toomey by 21 points in an early look at Pennsylvanias 2010 Republican Primary. Fifty-one percent (51%) of Republican voters statewide say theyd vote for Toomey while just 30% would support Specter.
Specter is viewed favorably by 42% of Pennsylvania Republicans and unfavorably by 55%, according to a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state. Those are stunningly poor numbers for a long-term incumbent senator. Specter was first elected to the Senate in 1980.
Toomey, who served in the House from 1999 to 2005, earns positive reviews from 66% and negative comments from just 19%.

Endangered RINO alert!
I hope this keeps! GO TOOMEY!
I’m afraid we are for heading for a 3-way race between Toomey(R), Specter(I) and Somebody(D). This is unlikely to turn out well for Toomey. And Specter would surely be pleased to see the seat go the Dem if he has to give it up himself. So the motivation to run as and Independent, hoping for a Liberman-like result with a fallback of Democrat takeover will just be irresistible for Specter. I don’t see this working out. But you never know. Toomey has to go for it.
What’s the over/under for the GOP supporting Specter?
*ping*

We will most likely lose that seat in the general but it is worth it to rid ourselves of this *&^%$$#@!! I still get a warm fuzzy feeling when I think of Lincoln Chaffe going down.
Pennsylvania Republicans? Is that like Florida Snowmen?
The National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman, John Cornyn, has already sent out a letter endorsing Specter.
These guys don’t get it.
You are probably right! But then again Spectre might attract more Democrats than Republicans.
I too would rather the seat go to a Democrat than Specter.
For one thing, there would be a better ranking Republican on the Judiciary committee, and then a better chairman should the Republicans retake the Senate.
I’ve had enough of the the wolves in the fold.
“I too would rather the seat go to a Democrat than Specter.”
It probably will. I don’t see a realistic chance of a conservative winning in PA. Maybe I’m missing something here, but my impression is Keystone Staters have a major jones for pork.
Rick and W really have their work cut out for them if they're going pull scottishlaw's @ss out of the fire this time.
The NRSC and GOP leadership should never, ever make endorsements during primaries, as that can be viewed as the party selecting a nominee prior to the primary election. IMO it's extremely unethical.
I think a real conservative can win in PA. Santorum won twice. Then he went wobbly and lost.
Any conservative that runs has to run fearlessly, not politically. That’s the key
I think Toomey is that type. I hope he wins.
Come come it’s not THAT bad.
