I’m afraid we are for heading for a 3-way race between Toomey(R), Specter(I) and Somebody(D). This is unlikely to turn out well for Toomey. And Specter would surely be pleased to see the seat go the Dem if he has to give it up himself. So the motivation to run as and Independent, hoping for a Liberman-like result with a fallback of Democrat takeover will just be irresistible for Specter. I don’t see this working out. But you never know. Toomey has to go for it.

Oh, I don’t know about that. If Toomey is the GOP nominee and Specter runs as an Independent, I think Specter would take the lion’s share of votes from socially liberal “Republicans” (most of who would be unlikely to vote for Toomey anyways) and would get a heck of a lot of Democrat votes (Specter always got Democrat votes, and shedding the R would only add to his appeal among Democrats). Toomey could end up winning with 38% or so.

Well, I’m more optimistic than you on this one, but I agree with you that, even if Toomey’s odds were lower, we can’t allow Specter to win the GOP nomination.

You are probably right! But then again Spectre might attract more Democrats than Republicans.

I too would rather the seat go to a Democrat than Specter.

For one thing, there would be a better ranking Republican on the Judiciary committee, and then a better chairman should the Republicans retake the Senate.

I’ve had enough of the the wolves in the fold.
