Mother Shoots Son, Self At Gun Range

CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A mother shot and killed her son, and then herself, inside a Casselberry Gun Range Sunday afternoon, according to police.

When Casselberry police arrived at the Shoot Straight Gun Range on South U.S. Highway 17-92 (see map) just after 4:00pm, they found two people had been shot in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police identified the man as 20-year-old Mitchel Moore. The shooter, his mother, was identified as 44-year-old Marie Moore.

Eyewitnesses said the pair was acting strangely and then the woman ran out of the room to get more ammunition. When she returned, eyewitnesses said, she shot her son and then turned the gun on herself.

Eyewitness Jim Copertino was in shooting target practice next to the pair and said the mother and son appeared hyper and jittery, as if they were on drugs.

"I noticed both of them were very anxious with each other. She kept getting very close to him and he was firing. She was almost over his shoulder," Copertino recalled. "She ran out to get more ammo, ran back in and then both were down."

And happened here in Tex. a few mo. ago, Older gent in a wheelchair that had been a regular at the range was put in assisted living by his family, Few days later, he rented a cab to the range, rented a gun, and went back to the firing lane area, and shot himself.
My own father committed suicide in his parents home in 1953., shot himself in the chest with a .22 rifle.
Gun or no gun, if someone is going to commit suicide, they are going to find a way to do it. Unfortunately there are far more graphic ways than shooting one's self, and countries with far less gun ownership than the USA have much higher suicide rates. Japan comes to mind. People are losing thier jobs, people that are used to living comfortably, and there will be some that can't deal with it.
There is much anxiety and worry in our nation retirement funds going away, home values tanking, communist president voted in by government dependents.

Once in a while, I would wonder “What if a nut shows up and starts shooting people?”. I will admit to getting creeped out at the range every once in a while.

I always countered that thought with the fact that they usually pick a “gun free” zone to do that in.

I guess nowhere is truly safe anymore.

If a guy can ruthlessly shoot bedridden octogenarians at a nursing home of all places, what is this world coming to?

Suicide has nothing to do with the “times” or who's in the White house. It's happened at gun ranges before, and it'll happen again, and it happens more frequently than you realize. In my own circle, I personally know five people who have been touched by such tragedy. Several years ago, one of my colleagues decided to “eat the gun” at work while in the office coffee room. Nobody ever found out why. My next door neighbor, was a lovely woman with everything to live for. Two beautiful kids, loving husband. Fine house in the suburbs. None of us knew she was under 24/7 suicide watch. One day she found herself with just 15 minutes of alone time. She went into the garage and started her car. That's all it took. Not surprisingly surviving friends and family members don't talk about it, but it's out there and it happens. It happens frequently

The speculation of motives on the mother/son case is going to be something

after reading the first synposis my first thought about motive was most cultures' most disgusting and sick perversion.

Just went and looked at that. Seems he and his girlfriend were looking forward to some alone time on a cruise together (from her post on March 30th). Definitely sounds like the Mom was the one with the mental problems. Poor guy...

More than a few folks have died at firing ranges, intentional and accidental. I remember a while back a kid getting shot in the head from a stray bullet from an outdoor range. There is no such thing as 100% safe folks, never will be.
