General Motors and Chrysler as yet haven’t done enough to earn long-term support from the US government.

That’s President Obama’s blunt assessment, made public a day before he plans to outline the latest White House aid proposal for the traditional US auto industry.

The troubled firms have made serious efforts to reform, and the White House has said it believes the US can have a successful auto industry.

But GM and Chrysler “aren’t there yet,” said Mr. Obama in an interview with CBS News’ Bob Schieffer that was broadcast on “Face the Nation” on March 29. “We think we can have a successful US auto industry. But it’s got to be one that’s realistically designed to weather this storm and to emerge, at the other end, much more lean, mean, and competitive than it currently is,” he said.

It's a good start. NEVER let a beancounter run your business.

Oh, and before the "oh, he did a good job" union drones pipe up here, Wagoner rammed this steaming pile through GM - it was his baby, and he should have been fired for it, but wasnt:

So I guess this week GM isn’t doing OK and will need more money.

I wish WAONER good luck whoever he is.

I don't. He recently said that using a federal gas tax to raise the price to $4 a gallon should be considered. He's one of the reasons I won't consider GM when I buy a new car over the next year.

Lutz announced he's leaving in Fall 09. He is the visionary who understands cars are sex. Maybe they can convince him to stay and run the place?

No worries. His bonus for driving GM into the dirt will be golden.

This will give “O” the chance to appoint a government lackey to run the company. Who wants to buy a car made by the government?? Large deposit required and all maintenance is free for the first 100 miles.

GM will be redefined as “Government Made”

I wonder who they will get to even consider taking his job?

The way the Obama people are for attacking CEO’s who put their company first over the one’s plans, I guarantee whoever it is will play softball with Washington.

Will the board have to have his replacement signed off on by Obama now that they took the money??

This will be interesting to watch.

I type corrected, thought he’d already retired, guess that was just an announcement.

That said.... would *you* want to be tied to the impending disaster that will be the Obama Administration’s resurrection of British Leyland????/

The next CEO won’t get a personal bailout, because the company will be owned by the feral government.
