Honored with Public Service Award, bloggers erupt in outrage
The U.S. Navy awarded U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., its Distinguished Public Service Award, triggering an Internet campaign to have Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter withdraw it.
Murtha, who publicly accused U.S. Marines of cold-blooded murder in a firefight in Haditha, Iraq, and was caught on camera in the Abscam scandal appearing to negotiate a bribe, was honored by the Navy for his "selfless devotion to the Nation's Sailors and Marines."
The award credits him with making sure the military services "were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism."
"His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history," the honor said.
It continued, "As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha's tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century."
An online petition that appeared almost immediately already has collected more than 11,500 signatures.
It was set up by Gabe Ledeen of VetsForFreedom.org.

Excellent...the only award that RAT B@$t@rd deserves!
I signed it and passed it on to others!
For God's sake man up!
I signed for you.
I suspect it was a favor to Murtha by SECNAV Winter.
Winter was in the defense industry before becoming the secretary and headed a couple large defense companies. I also suspect he and Murtha knew each other well because of that.
Has to be the "skimmer navy" the Submarine Navy would have had Murtha non-qualed!
Do you know he didn't get a dishonorable discharge? He never released his DD-214 did he?
Only the paranoid survive - Andy Grove, Intel
Thanks for the ping, jaz. You know, I’m thinking awarding this honor to Murtha could further add to proving Undue Command Influence (UCI) in both LtCol Chessani and SSGT Wuterich’s cases.
You would have to be blind to think Murtha’s cold-blooded comments did not affect the Haditha Marines and helped ensure charges would be preferred. If the Sec. Navy is so concerned about rewarding Murtha for his help with defense appropriations, why wouldn’t he throw a handful of his own Marines under the bus for the “good of the Corps”?
Thank you both for signing!
Thanks for signing and pinging others!
Let me be clear - someone needs an ass kicking for approving this. Murtha hates the military men and is plain spoken about it.
I hope Mr Murtha receiced a class A beat down, followed by a nice refreshing hour or four on the waterboard.
These utterly corrupt politicians and their stooges in high places can posture and obfuscate all they desire....truth is we know what they are and can see through their deceptions like Windex on glass. The timing of this Navy award is highly suspicious in tandem with the acquittal of LtCol. Chessani. I’m surprised the Navy stooges didn’t have Code pink present the Hog with the award!
CaptainAmiigaf; If you are a citizen of the “United States” it’s ok to be scared. However, I feel it is both your and my duty to stand strong. It is all about, “We the people.” It is our country and therefore ours to lose. We must not ever let that happen, FIGHT. Speak your mind, its one of your rights. Become involved with like minded people. Put your trust in God, believe by faith that he will fight the battles. And as George Washington said, “I would rather die on my feet than on my knees.” Educate yourself to the wiles of the enemy and be prepared, WE WILL WIN!
It’s kind of sick because of what Murtha has done.
Giving that award to “Moutha” merely cheapens the meaning of the award itself. Kind of like when they gave a Nobel to Arafat.

Why are people on this thread blaming the ‘Navy’ as though anyone on active duty had a hand in this.
The award was signed by SecNav Donald C Winter - GWB’s SecNav since 2006, however it should be noted that the award was given March 5th - after GWB left, but before Winter departed. It is unclear at this point whether this award was Winter’s idea or if the Obama administration was involved.
You make a good point. Hopefully SSgt. Wuterich’s attorneys will pick up on that which I’m pretty sure they will.
This kind of thing is so outragous that it is unbelievable.
I will sign the petition.
