Honored with Public Service Award, bloggers erupt in outrage
The U.S. Navy awarded U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., its Distinguished Public Service Award, triggering an Internet campaign to have Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter withdraw it.
Murtha, who publicly accused U.S. Marines of cold-blooded murder in a firefight in Haditha, Iraq, and was caught on camera in the Abscam scandal appearing to negotiate a bribe, was honored by the Navy for his "selfless devotion to the Nation's Sailors and Marines."
The award credits him with making sure the military services "were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism."
"His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history," the honor said.
It continued, "As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha's tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century."
An online petition that appeared almost immediately already has collected more than 11,500 signatures.
It was set up by Gabe Ledeen of VetsForFreedom.org.

If the military is honoring traitors, nobody is looking out for the country.
It is not the Navy Sailors but the civilian bureaucracy IMHO. I doubt any E-3 gives a dang about Murtha and that is a promise.
You’re exactly right that it was some civilian jughead in the Pentagon who pulled this crap. I’m just frustrated as hell that Fat Jack the crook and military hater now has something to hang on his wall to show the world what a great guy he is. It’s disgusting.
I signed on to sign this petition and signed OFF. Why? It is March, 2009 and an AMERICAN citizen has suddenly realized that he is AFRAID to put his signature on a citizen’s petition. In the United States of America.
In the past couple of days, I’ve seen Murtha’s compatriots call for “violence” against Americans who merely obeyed the law, a law recently passed by Congress.
I’ve seen everything this country ONCE stood for denigrated and villified by the CHOSEN leaders.
I’ve read of a President who thought that WOUNDED WARRIORS should be required to pay for their own medical treatment. Yes, he backed down, but the fact that the thought even entered what passes for his mind is horrifying.
I’ve watched and listened as ELECTED officials ignore their personal culpability in causing today’s problems as they DEMAND AS THEIR RIGHT to take charge of the curing.

Murtha gets his (earthly reward).... Lt. Chessani has an everlasting one instead! BTW... Chessani is a christian and his kids are home schooled.

This is absolutely DIGUSTING! Truly when they came up with the oath and made sure it mentioned enemies foreign AND domestic they knew what they were talking about...
I signed this, and emailed to every veteran I know, plus asked them to take it to their American Legion, VFW, Fleet Reserve, etc., meetings.
