MARCH 3--Angered that her local McDonald's was out of Chicken McNuggets, a Florida woman called 911 three times to report the fast food "emergency." Latreasa Goodman, 27, last Saturday called police to complain that a cashier--citing a McDonald's all sales are final policy--would not give her a refund. When cops responded to the restaurant, Goodman told them, "This is an emergency. If I would have known they didn't have McNuggets, I wouldn't have given my money, and now she wants to give me a McDouble, but I don't want one." Goodman noted, "I called 911 because I couldn't get a refund, and I wanted my McNuggets," according to the below Fort Pierce Police Department report. That logic, however, did not keep cops from citing Goodman for misusing the 911 system. Even after being issued a misdemeanor citation, Goodman contended, "this is an emergency, my McNuggets are an emergency."

I get everything about it. I only said this woman in fact had a crime being committed against her. That was important to her. BTW, you are incorrect that the 911 system is only for life-or-death situations.
What do you do when you have a car accident and no one is hurt? Here you call 911. What do you do if you come home and your house has been broken into? Here you call 911. What do you do if someone has assaulted you or robbed you and run? Here you call call 911. By your silly view, one could not call 911 after a bank robbery if the robber had already gone. DO YOU GET IT NOW?

Where I live we call 911 for emergencies such as medical emergencies and in nonemergencies we call the regular number.

This woman had a crime committed against her. Though calling 911 may have been a bit much, it’s the only number advertised for POLICE anymore.
Was she just supposed to walk away and let them get away with taking her money for a product she didn’t want?
I was once at a MCDONALD'S [wal-mart] with my brothers fiancee and she ordered fries and a big mac .When she went to get the order - there were 2 trays - one with fries - which the guy behind the counter told her it was hers .
She just picked the tray up and a Middle age white woman started to yell : “That's my order b***** “! “You go back to the ghettos from where you came “ And she went on with many racial slurs .
The main point is it was the fault of the guy behind the counter .
My gut feelings is that there is more to this story then the MSM want to report.
A crime ... for a $1, maybe $2? For the love of pete ... don't enable these people by agreeing with them. Call Mickey D's corporate headquarters and they will probably send you coupons for ten times the amount. You don't call 911.

Is she less worthy of police backup and intervention than McY D's is? What do you do when someone takes your money and won't give you exactly what you paid for, or your money back? Pull a gun and threten them to give your $s back? Walk away? ...or do you dial 911 like the f'n store would if you grabbed $6 out of the register and walked?

911 is the emergency response number. It's for EMERGENCIES. You can get emergency Fire, Ambulance and/or Law Enforcement help through your 911 call. In some jurisdictions, all three are sent to EVERY 911 call. It is NOT for routine, non-emergency issues. Every one of those agencies has a regular phone number for that sort of call.
You call 911 when you need Police/Fire/Ambulance response RIGHT NOW.

This situation is NOT an emergency. Here's a clue why: The McDonalds restaurant won't be running down the street to get away.
This is the kind of dispute for which small claims court exists. Yes, money was involved, and most cases which come before small claims probably involve money too.
It's not an emergency, and the caller had no business using 911 for it. She should be fined.
A crime of $3 or $5 to someone could be as important as a $100 fraud committed against someone else.
You could be right that McDonald’s corp would have treated her better than the clerk/manager was treating her. But it is still a crime when someone takes your money under false pretenses and when someone is committing a crime against you, one option you have is to call the cops.
You would perhaps think she should have reached over the counter and taken her money? You would perhaps suggest she assault the clerk. She did the right thing. She called the police. The guy was wrong to cite her.
According to a bunch of clymers on this thread and the lying PD, yes. She's just an unworthy obamanation. Unless the PD can show FL statute 812.014 (aka theft) no longer existed at the time they gave her that bogus citation, they should be sued for harrassment and more. Their citations of the statutes is also bad. The statute they tried several times to cite, but got wrong each time was 365.172(13).

No, genius, 911 is the EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBER for police, fire, ambulance.
Unless it's a genuine emergency, intelligent people will look in the front of the telephone directory and call the LISTED NON-EMERGENCY contact number for whichever service they wish to contact.
As another poster wrote, the MINIMUM fine for being as stupid as this woman should be $911, PER CALL.

No. The state of FL created the service with the express intent for it to be used for PUBLIC SAFETY ASSISTANCE. That includes police assistance to THEFTS IN PROGRESS. The legislature did not give any police in any FL jurisdiction the power to discriminate between what VALID complaints of CRIMINAL LAW VIOLATIONS are worthy enough to be given due public safety assistance.
For reference: FL365.172(13) MISUSE OF 911 OR E911 SYSTEM; PENALTY.--911 and E911 service must be used solely for emergency communications by the public. Any person who accesses the number 911 for the purpose of making a false alarm or complaint or reporting false information that could result in the emergency response of any public safety agency; any person who knowingly uses or attempts to use such service for a purpose other than obtaining public safety assistance; or any person who knowingly uses or attempts to use such service in an effort to avoid any charge for service, commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
Note the lack of false premises in the call. It was a valid call complaining of an ongoing violation of FL812.014(a) This statute therefore does not apply.

The regular number is for infomational calls and other chit chat type calls that do not involve a NEED for PUBLIC SAFETY ASSISTANCE.
It is the contact number for PUBLIC SAFETY ASSISTANCE. The legislature gave neither you, or any other bozo, badge, or not, the power to determine the validity of a call for PUBLIC SAFETY ASSISTANCE, other than to determine if the call was made falsely. A violation of FL812.014(a) was in fact in progress, SO THE CALL WAS VALID!
