You wouldnt know it some days, but there are moderates in this country moderate conservatives, moderate liberals, just plain moderates. We sympathize with a lot of the things that President Obama is trying to do. We like his investments in education and energy innovation. We support health care reform that expands coverage while reducing costs.
But the Obama budget is more than just the sum of its parts. There is, entailed in it, a promiscuous unwillingness to set priorities and accept trade-offs. There is evidence of a party swept up in its own revolutionary fervor caught up in the self-flattering belief that history has called upon it to solve all problems at once.
So programs are piled on top of each other and we wind up with a gargantuan $3.6 trillion budget. We end up with deficits that, when considered realistically, are $1 trillion a year and stretch as far as the eye can see. We end up with an agenda that is unexceptional in its parts but that, when taken as a whole, represents a social-engineering experiment that is entirely new.
U.S. has never been a society riven by class resentment. Yet the Obama budget is predicated on a class divide. The president issued a read-my-lips pledge that no new burdens will fall on 95 percent of the American people. All the costs will be borne by the rich and all benefits redistributed downward....
The U.S. has traditionally had a relatively limited central government. But federal spending as a share of G.D.P. is zooming from its modern norm of 20 percent to an unacknowledged level somewhere far beyond.
Those of us who consider ourselves moderates moderate-conservative, in my case are forced to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was.

Unprincipled morons like Brooks ( rumored to make 300,000 a year) have no way to adjust their income. Their gonna take a hard hit and I won't cry a bit for them!
Also Maureen Dowd is gonna get hit too! HAHA!!!!!
Obama was the most liberal congressman in DC and yet this man thought he'd somehow transform into a moderate once elected president?
And those of us who knew all along just who he was and tried to warn you despite you smugness and arrogance will never let you forget it. You and Buckley can rot in hell together for what you have brought down upon us.
Too bad Davie, you should have paid attention to what the conservative commentators and thinkers were saying about Obama during the campaign for election. We are not one bit surprised by what he is attempting to do. Too bad you are such an arrogant jackass. When the dust settles it is the moderates who are always found dead in the middle of the political road.
No one is too stupid to have a column in the NYT...
Brooks the backstabber wakes up. Gee, thanks.
How much of a brain-dead, pie-in-the-sky media boob do you have to be to write something like this?
Who is "we," David? You and the gerbil in your pants?
Idiot.
Everyone on FR tried to tell you guys at the NYTs and all the rest of the mesmerized journalists but you were too busy calling everyone racist who looked passed Obama's skin color and saw the truth.
Duh...Welcome back David.
Can you say useful idiot?

Well, yeah.
But calling people stupid for doing stupid things is hardly a way to win them back.
Maybe we need “Obama voter remorse & forgiveness cards”.
It would be a pledge something like:
“I, an Obama voter, was blind and fell hook, line and sinker for the phony “hope and change” of a big Government left-liberal charlatan. I am deeply remorseful for what I’ve done to the country and I pledge now to never vote for another Democrat again so long as Obama is in the White House or his fellow liberal Democrats run Congress. I pledge to turn back to candidates and parties that are fiscally responsible and put people and the economy first. So Help Me God,
- Remorseful Obama Voter”
