Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who is also an OB/GYN, told CNSNews.com on Friday that many medical practitioners, including himself, will go to prison before agreeing to engage in medical practices they morally oppose, such as abortion.
Earlier that same day, the Obama administration had announced it was reviewing a Bush administration regulation known as the conscience clause. That Health and Human Services regulation protects health-care workers at federally funded institutions from having to engage in practices that violate their moral or religious beliefs. These practices include performing or referring abortions, performing sterilizations, or giving or receiving training in these practices.
Federal funding is widespread in the health care sector owing to such programs as Medicare, Medicaid, the newly expanded SCHIP insurance program for children, and the many billions in federal funds spent each year on medical research.
The Obama administrations review is considered the precursor to rescinding the regulation.
I think a lot of us will go to jail, Coburn told CNSNews.com when asked what would happen if the administration reverses the policy. Lets see them prosecute the first one of us for not doing that.
By that comment, Coburn meant that doctors, himself included, are willing to defy the law before agreeing to perform medical procedures that violate their conscience, a Coburn spokesman clarified.
Coburn spoke to CNSNews.com after he delivered a speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
God be with him for taking a stand. I fear all who oppose BO will be in prison by 2012.
The upside to this is that there will not be enough room in the prisons.
I fear you are right. I think our only hope is to start opposing him loudly and vocally, so that the media can’t ignore it and at least if we are whisked off to prison, it will be known to the rest of the world. That’s what Coburn, Rush, et al. are doing, making as much noise as possible so that Obama can’t carry on as if he has no opposition.
The inmates and the guards switch places.
The opposite of life is DEATH, not “choice”.
Well the feds need come for me now cause I don’t like this assclown. Pretty smile, baby murderer, socialist, anti American.
“...that many medical practitioners, including himself, will go to prison before agreeing to engage in medical practices they morally oppose, such as abortion.”
Doctor, how about you refuse to be subject to evil and un american manipulation of the law AND you refuse to go to jail? Thank God George Washington and the fellas’ knew when to show respect for Law and Process and when to pull their hands out of their pockets and say, “No and go to hell, sir”.
Earlier that same day, the Obama administration had announced it was reviewing a Bush administration regulation known as the conscience clause.
Socialists have little regard for human life. We have a Socialist President a Socialist House Leader and many Administraion appointments being made of Socialists. Human life will in all manner suffer greatly during the next 4 years.
More babies will be slaughtered. Older folks will be written off and left to die. These are already standard action in Socialist Country’s around the world. Now that the Socialist have taken over her it willhappen here.
Federal funding is widespread in the abortion program.
The truth is that prison is not the first option, it is the last. If it was a choice between obedience and prison, it would actually be *easier*.
What they intend to do is to break down resistance a bit at a time. First of all, mandate that medical students *have* to study these subjects to graduate. “Just studying” is different from “practicing”, so a lot of resistance will be broken down. It also eliminates the most stubborn, who are will to give up medicine even before they are trained, so they are never “counted” as medical people who resisted.
Second, since medicine is already dominated by federal money, they incrementally cut back on money for physicians who resist.
Then they work at the institutional level as well. So it’s not just the government applying pressure, but the HMOs, insurance companies, hospitals, etc.
They have willing accomplices in some State governments as well, who also turn the screws.
They are masters at coercion.
But they don't have to put people in jail.
They just need to say, "Do this or you lose your license. Do this or you lose your job. Do this or you lose your funding. Do this or you'll be sued. Do this or you don't get published. Do this or you lose your certification. Do this or you don't get tenure. Do this or you're demoted. Do this or you're fired.
Step-by-step they have a million ways to turn the screws. That's why we NEED explicit protections for conscience. It needs to be ILLEGAL TO DISCRIMINATE against health workers who won't cooperate with abortion - euthanasia -infanticide - suicicde - the many manifestations of the Death Project.
I don’t think Obama will finish his first term.
“many medical practitioners, including himself, will go to prison”; uh, well, he might go to prison; the bulk of opposing medical practitioners would be better served going to Uruguay.
july 23. ‘09 is my guess
Thanks for a thoughtful post.
Is this rule strictly for “reproductive” procedures, or for anything that goes against one’s religion?
What I’m concerned about is something that we’ve seen on numerous threads about the goings on in Great Britain with muslim doctors and nurses. Women refusing to reveal their arms in order to wash. Refusing to use sanitizers, due to their alcohol content, etc...
I am just wondering if they might eventually start bringing that crap here...
Makr
I am not sure if this law will apply to them if they do not take federal funding. If it does Congress and Obama will have more blood on their hands.
Speaking of Congress, I did not see Pelosi with aahes on her head last Wednesday.
I wonder if the Holy Father told her not take part in the Eurchrist.
