Culture of conspiracy: The Birthers (mainstream decides to cover)
Politico ^ | 3-1-09 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/01/2009 8:22:44 AM PST by STARWISE

Bill Clinton had the Vince Foster "murder." George W. Bush had 9/11 Truth. And the new administration has brought with it a new culture of conspiracy: The Birthers.

Out of the gaze of the mainstream and even the conservative media is a flourishing culture of advocates, theorists and lawyers, all devoted to proving that Barack Obama isn't eligible to be president of the United States.

Viewed as irrelevant by the White House, and as embarrassing by much of the Republican Party, the subculture still thrives from the conservative website WorldNetDaily, which claims that some 300,000 people have signed a petition demanding more information on Obama's birth, to Cullman, Alabama, where Sen. Richard Shelby took a question on the subject at a town hall meeting last week.

Their confinement to the fringe hasn't cooled the passion of believers; the obscure New York preacher James Manning turned up at a National Press Club session in December to declare the president "the most notorious criminal in the history not just of America, but of this entire planet."

I think calling one side “birthers” is a personal attack so I’ll just hit the abuse button.

Of course, since there’s no real standard in place, it’s a hit-or-miss on whether it gets tagged as abuse by the mods.

most presidential candidates have long careers and had been vetted along the way. 0bama has not.
_____________
Yes he has, he wrote a book and that documents his past. How dare you question that and want real documented evidence.

You are wrong.

Natural Born Citizen is a much higher standard than Citizen.

You can be “naturalized” and serve in Congress.

Not so for POTUS.

(You know, the most interesting thing about this debate, to me, is how ignorant some of the people are about the law, on both sides of the issue.)

Are you dense?

The “certificate on file” might very well state that Obama was born in Kenya or Canada or at sea.

It is entirely possible to generate a birth document, in any state, without being born in that state!

The only people who had standing to question BHO's qualifications was The Senate when he was a sitting Senator. The "vetting time" is over. There's NOTHING I can locate in the Constitution that gives anyone else standing to determine eligibility qualifications for him

A Senator need only be a citizen, 36 years old or older, and resident in the US for 9 years. A President must be a natural born citizen.

As for Constitutional Authority to enforce the Art. II section 1 , "natural born citizen" requirement, try this section:

Section. 2. The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority; — to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls; — to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction; — to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party;
Art. III Section 2.

If the alleged ineligibility of a person selected by the Electoral College for the office of President is not a "constroversy", as well as a "case", what is?

” feel justified in calling Ben Smith an ignorant douche bag, because you don’t have to have photocopies of attorney’s invoices for defending Zero - you just have to have about a nickel’s worth of common sense. “

The legal work is being done pro bono. Most likely all of it, but at least all in CA.

Watch this video. At the the time, everyone thought it had to do with some big MO whitey tapes. They never surfaced, so what was this really all about?

"Are you dense?

Yes, apparently I'm dense. And, apparently I'm in very good company as The Federalist Society, The Thomas More Law Center and Judicial Watch ALL think that this is an issue of folly.

If you ask me to pick between guys preaching a global cabal to hide the original birth place of a single person, or the brightest conservative legal minds in the country, I'm going to pick the latter every time.

Let’s ignore the substance and implications of this for the moment and ask a question:

What kind of a journalist is Ben Smith for ridiculing the clamor to release documents about a politician?

As others have said, virtually no record of Obama — health, education, etc. — has been released. The media, who will file a FOIA request for the brand of toothpaste Bush used, are in the act of actively mocking the attempt to access a record that is known to exist.

What kind of journalism is that?

Maybe the Birth Certificate says: Father Frank Marshall Davis

I guess that would be embarrassing, and he would not have wanted that to come out before the election, but now, it would be a "Good Thing", because Davis, was an American Citizen, natural born even, AFAIK.

Obama’s lawyers in these motions, argued that revealing the information (birth certificate, citizenship in other countries, etc.) would “cause a defined and serious injury” to Obama and/or the DNC. They say revealing these documents raises a “legitimate privacy concern” and the above mentioned risk that “particularly serious embarrassment will result from turning over the requested documentation.” ***
_________
Defined and serious injury to BO??? Hmmm that should be enough to make anyone say WTF.

Yep, the problem is that so many on the right are focusing on the wrong things. I don’t have to believe that Obama is ineligible to be president (he’s not) to oppose socialism. I don’t have to believe that Obama is a Muslim (I don’t believe he is) to oppose the socialism he represents. I don’t have to think that his wife is ugly (she’s not) to know that his socialist policies are a disaster in the making. These days, there are more red herrings than meat even here at FR when it comes to Obama, and that’s disappointing.
