Troubled San Francisco paper in danger of closing [San Francisco Chronicle is dying]

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco Chronicle joined the lengthening list of imperiled newspapers Tuesday as its owner set out to purge the payroll and slash other expenses in a last-ditch effort to reverse years of heavy losses.

If it can't reduce expenses dramatically within the next few weeks, the Hearst Corp. said it will close or sell the Chronicle, northern California's largest newspaper with a paid weekday circulation of 339,430.

Hearst didn't specify a savings target nor a deadline for wringing out the expenses. A Hearst spokesman didn't immediately respond to messages Tuesday.

But management made it clear that the cost-cutting will require a significant number of layoffs.

"Our current situation dictates that we accomplish these cost savings quickly," Chronicle Publisher Frank Vega wrote in a memo to the staff. "Business as usual is no longer an option."

Unfortunately there are some legitimate businesses that rely on newspapers and although they do not support these papers’ leftwing politics they will lose customers.

Charles Foster Kane: You're right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars *next* year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... 60 years.

Well, being that the movie was released in 1941, he came pretty close. Only off by 8 years.

Watchmen looks great. Of course they made Punisher and I think another flop too. But they came out of it great.

I wish it was possible to have a Spiderman series with movie quality, but its not

It would be interesting, but its SF. It’d be gay porn cartoons.

I used to hear that the only reason to get the SF Chronicle was the columnists...but the ones of that era are all dead now. The best-known was Herb Caen. I remember seeing him being interviewed on national TV after the 1989 earthquake (the one that hit just before one of the World Series games was supposed to begin).

I must say, playing devils advocate, I can go online and read any newspaper for free, poor liberal jounalism notwithstanding. Before the internet I subscribed to the Washington Times and my local paper. Now I read them both for free online. Doesn’t seem like good business sense to me. Obviously web advert dollars don’t support them. I would be willing to pay a small online fee for good newspapers.

“Mark Morford”

Absolutely unreadable. It ain’t what he sez, it’s the way what he sez it. I have absolutely no basis for criticizing the substance of what he sez, because for the life of me I’ve never been able to comprehend it. I think he thinks he’s pretty clever, though.

Is it bad to wanna to take a whiz on their stock certificates? Considering the damage that Pravda by the Bay has done over the years, I say no to your question and to mine...

They can’t go out of business soon enough, in my opinion.

I hope the Mercury News is next.

Both are anti-American, anti-family, anti-capitalist tools of our enemies.

Their bias is every bit as blatant in their articles as it is in their editorials.

BANKRUPT the ENEMEDIA!

There are many reasons the Koranicle is in trouble.

--It is not reader-friendly. There are too many sections that are about 8 pages each. It's hard to find the sports section without disassembling the entire paper. Do we really need a Wine section?

--The internet/24 hour news channels.

--Blurring the lines between news and opinion.

--Functioning as a cheerleader for reporters/editors' favorite politicians.

Ultimately, the Chron is suffering what has undermined the entire newspaper business: too many people entering journalism who "want to make a difference" instead of a love of writing or because of the excitment of the profession. There is a place for advocacy journalism (Village Voice, Bay Guardian, the gay weeklies) but it has no place in a major daily newspaper. To focus on the far left is a bad business decision.

Herb Cain was very interesting usually very provocative. They also ran Debra Saunders I think was her name she was good. It was sometime in the early eighties I realized the content was different depending where you lived. they had 5 stars on the front and you might live in a 3 star and get the more Conservative pictures and content do not remember how it worked. they punched out some vile things over the years.

Marvel (or was it DC?) took out a billion dollar loan to make films. They bet the company on those films!

Wasn't that because Stan Lee was rolled for all he was worth by Hillary Clinton? Wasn't that what the whole Peter Paul thing was about?

They should be following the philosophy of their fellow Socialists by quadrupling their spending. That should fix their problem.
