Steele on GOP primary: 'I am open to that baby'

RNC chair Michael Steele says he is "open to that baby" when it comes to supporting primary challengers against the three GOP senators who voted in favor of the stimulus package.

"Oh, yes, I'm always open to everything, baby, absolutely" Steele said yesterday on Fox News' 'Your World with Neil Cavuto'.

Republican Sens. Arlen Specter (Pa.) and Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (Maine) all gave the thumbs up to the Obama stimulus plan, making conservatives vent their wrath on the blogs, television and talk radio. Specter is the only one of the three up for re-elect in 2010.

Steele said he is not going to fight the conservative wrath within each members states, proving that he really is the new sheriff in town.

Good. I hope this guy can do it and push hard. How about’s O’s BC? Steele can bring it up because he is more African-AMERICAN than Hussein.

Why is the “baby” stuff? Is he trying to sound like a hipster or Sammy Davis Jr. “Groovy baby” :-)

Steele proves that conservatism and “cool” are not at odds.

Saying it is one thing, doing it is another.

I recall one other Spector stunt, forget what it was. And DUBYA went to PA and supported him in his re-election if I recall. Supported him against another more conservative pub if memory serves me.

The GOP....they have fine suntans, head hairs that all sit perfectly proper in their appointed places. Their nails are polished to pretty and they attend the best of the DC cocktail parties.

It’s what we elected them to do as they see it.

Let’s see how Steele handles this. If one dime of GOP money goes, in any way, to support these losers, I hate to think how the party’s going to fracture.

I saw Steele in that segment. He gave himself an out by saying he would abide by what the local party wanted. I say bullshit to what the local party wants. They’re obviously part of the problem as common sense would dictate.

In these cases, the national party should come out plainly AGAINST these clowns regardless of the liberal locals.

Great start. Now pledge NO RNC or Senate money for any of these 3!

He has the right idea, but PA will never see another Toomey or Santorum, and Maine is a hopeless case.

He’s not going to fight the conservative wrath? That’s big of him.

How about actively supporting conservative wrath?

"My responsibility is to follow the lead of the state parties, to get their advice, what their intent is. Those senators are going to have to account to those voters there. And we'll work with the state party and we'll follow their lead," he added.

Cool!

Maybe a RINO and a Dem could split the liberal vote, and a conservative could win. (Assuming the RINO gets dumped by the party and runs as an independent....)

Maine is a hopeless case.

So suck it up and give Maine to the Democrats!!

I will never understand the logic that it's better to have a lib in gop clothing (which requires a fine tan and perfect head hairs) than to have nothing.

I hear about committee heads and stuff and let's not forget the majority gets the better offices, heaven forbid I should accuse the GOP of that sort of thing that would muss their head hairs, pale their tans and rub off the polish.

The cost of annoying the rest of the base throughout the country who are sick and tired of two lib dolts from Maine determing the direction of the party has to outweigh any benefits. Although I know a fine office for fine head hairs is very important, yes, I understand this.

Why is the “baby” stuff?

The headline is poorly written. The story, as it is written, says that he said he's "open to that baby". I'm thinking he was actually saying, "I'm open to that, baby!" Punctuation is important.

It's just a figure of speech, and used every day by lots of folks.

Now we just need to end the open primaries to non-registered Republicans.

Chairman Steele - Registered Republicans ONLY!

Be careful what you wish for. You may not like it the other way around, with local groups being forced to do what the NATIONAL GOP says to do.

He needs to lose the “baby.”

I'd find it rather off-putting if he started making an effort to sound like a WASP. That lingering stereotype of the Republican party is one of the reasons some people still vote Democrat.

Does Maine have a lot of industry? If not they’re probably just another welfare state, so of course go blue.
