Hot Air ^ | February 16, 2009 | Ed Morrissey

...No matter how big a tent the Republicans need to pitch, they still need to stand for core values — and among them should be fiscal responsibility and smaller government for greater individual liberty. Porkulus fails on both counts...

The GOP needs them to offer an illusory chance at filibustering legislation, although their failure to filibuster something as bad as Porkulus more or less exposes that as an empty threat.

Couldn't agree more with this. If the Republican't 3 won't stand up to a bill this bad, they won't stand up to anything. The 3 are a write off, and it's best to get them out of the Senate as soon as possible.

They should have stood for that same core value when there was a republican in the Whitehouse, not just now when there’s a RAT in charge.

There are likely only 2 ways that this will happen: 1)they stop breathing for more than 30 minutes 2) Conservatives from all over the country donate to their opponents in the next primary.

Yes, on all this, but “big tent” thinking is wrong from the get-go. Remember? it wasn’t until Bob Dole ran that the term was coined. It was wrong-headed then and even wronger now. The whole concept of “core values” MEANS something, and it’s about time the GOP recognized it and started winning again.

This is why the “60” the dims wanted was largely irrelevant. They can always convince a few RINO traitors to cross over to the dark side.

Many in the GOP leadership seem to believe winning is all about "politics".

But, to the voters, it's not. It's about "ideology".

This is why I believe that RNC Chair needs to expel the three of them from the party. If the GOP wants to prove that it has returned to its conservative roots, they need to bounce Collins Spectre and Snowe-job out of the party. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Collins was just reelected for six years and Snowe is not up until 2012 so let’s all concentrate on Specter because we don’t stand a chance to oust either one in Maine and neither are up for reelection.

Specter barely won the last time and frankly I wanted him gone in 2004 but not only did Bush/Rove push him but Bush agreed he should be head of Judiciary which was even dumber IMHO. Look what it got us!

We can oust Specter in 2010 and time to find a candidate that can beat Specter and win in November. At least we will stand for something. I am 100% with not reelecting anyone that is against fiscal conservatism and smaller government to go with individual liberties and may I add who believes in Scottish law! Specter needs to be OUSTED!

Steele has no authority to expell or do anything else to a sitting Reublican Senator who is elected by their State not nationally. That is also a slippery slope you don’t want to go down at the national level.

I don’t agree with their votes even a little but not for Michael Steele to determine that should throw them out of the Party.

Where do some of you get your information about what the RNC Chair can and cannot do? You do know that every Senator is elected at the state level in a federal election which means the State GOP Chair has little leverage to speak of either. It would have to go before the State Committee and can guarantee you in Maine that the Maine GOP is just glad to have two Republican senators representing them since the state is not exactly Republican.

True, so as Ed says “Republicans need to find credible primary opponents for these three, even if it means losing the seats, because after Porkulus it appears they’re already lost”. Specter is up first I believe.

Ironically, this bill may give the GOP a chance to return to its "core value" of small government and fiscal responsibility. If the economic woes have not abated by 2010 (an open question, but likely to my mind) the bill will leave the Democrats wide open on these issues.

The problem is that the Republican elephant stampedes left as soon as some twittering liberal mouse (or rat if you prefer) arrives with accusations of not being politically correct.

The left never budges, always puts up a monolithic front when they want to. Republicans cave.

We're trying to learn.... The State Committee you speak of, in Specter's case, would be he PA State Republican Committee? So, if the RNC can't vote officials out of the Party, and doesn't distribute National Party campaign funds, what do they do?

Yup.

It would have been so EASY to make this a much much better bill.

In the past, I was worried about losing the majority, so I advocated the ‘lets get RINOs instead of lib Dems’. But at this point, we have a worst-of-both-worlds situation where bad bad policy is sold as ‘bipartisan’ because 3 out of 220 Republicans went along with a partisan liberal Democrat horrible bill.

They should be run out of the GOP for all I care.

What organization can I join to help defeat Specter/Snowe/Collins?

Has anyone started an organization targeting those 3 idiots specifically? So we can help these clowns become scoopers at Baskin Robbins?
