Peanuts on Northwest Airlines prompt protests.. War on Peanuts!

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The return of peanuts to the snack menu at Northwest Airlines this month has prompted a spasm of protests from travelers with allergies.. The change comes four months after Northwest merged with Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and in the midst of a national salmonella outbreak involving Peanut Corporation of America. Georgia, where the company has a plant, is the top peanut-producing state in the country. Northwest began handing out the goobers as snacks on February 1, as Delta has been doing for years. In Minneapolis, where Northwest is based, news of the change has resulted in a flood of responses on the Web site of the Star Tribune, a local newspaper. "This is a very disappointing development," wrote one man who responded to the story. "My wife's allergy is so severe that if someone is sitting next to her and eating peanuts, the odor is enough to trigger an allergic reaction." "Northwest is really out of touch with its customers and the reality of allergies to peanuts," wrote another reader. "What's wrong with pretzels?"

And I suppose that an incontinent person should be allowed to spend the entire flight in the bathroom as well?

from the time the door on a plane closes to the time it opens no fresh air gets in, also being at x thousands of feet makes getting emergency treatment for Anaphylaxis somewhat difficult..

‘Yes we do... are you aware that every expose to something you are allergic to makes that allergy worse?”

having serious allergic reactions to certain medicines I am aware that can happen.

“Are you also aware that the epipens have an effective use time of about a half hour during which you’re supposed to be getting to an ER?”

Perhaps she shouldn’t go on airplanes??? Peanuts are everywhere so if its a matter of life or death driving to your destination would be an option.

You are supposed to go to the emergency room right away if you are injected with epinephrine. Not possible when airborne. Airlines that serve peanuts or nuts are just asking for trouble. And people with severe food allergies are not whiners. (P.S.: I have no allergies, but I have long experience with this.)

Not knocking anyone who has a food allergy..

Not allergic to peanuts, but certain types of nuts -- mouth swells up so that I look like a chipmunk and an anti-histamine is necessary to knock down the swelling and numbness. Folks around the office hide their mixed-nut snacks when I come by their desks!

Nothing is 100%, we could die driving or our plane can crash but one does try to find reasonable compromises to live normally.. Even before my kid was born I was fine giving up peanuts on planes seemed the human thing to do.

You can always refuse food you don’t like/are allergic to/is against your religion/etc.

You don’t have any right to demand that any airline stop serving the food because of some imaginary odor-phobia.

I hate drinking water for religious reasons - prefer beer and whisky in that order. Should I demand that airlines stop serving water to accomodate my bizarre fetishes?

Sure we are. The longer we control our diet to avoid gluten the more sensitive we become. Dust off your vegemite sandwich could cause virtually any of us to offload instantly right in your lap as we begin running for the lavatory.

It's for your own good!

Stick with peanuts ~ give up the pretzels, bread and bread byproducts!

I take it that your answer is “yes”?

Boeing.com

“Here’s briefly how the system works:

Cabin Air System Operation
Pressurized air for the cabin comes from the compressor stages in the aircraft’s jet engines. Moving through the compressor, the outside air gets very hot as it becomes pressurized. The portion drawn off for the passenger cabin is first cooled by heat exchangers in the engine struts and then, after flowing through ducting in the wing, is further cooled by the main air conditioning units.

The cooled air then flows to a chamber where it is mixed with an approximately equal amount of highly filtered air from the passenger cabin. The combined outside and filtered air is ducted to the cabin and distributed through overhead outlets.

Inside the cabin, the air flows in a circular pattern and exits through floor grilles on either side of the cabin or, on some airplanes, through overhead intakes. The exiting air goes below the cabin floor into the lower lobe of the fuselage. The airflow is continuous and is used for maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature. About half of the air exiting the cabin is exhausted from the airplane through an outflow valve in the lower lobe, which also controls the cabin pressure. The other half is drawn by fans through special filters under the cabin floor, and then is mixed with the outside air coming in from the engine compressors.

These high efficiency filters have similar performance to those filters used to keep the air clean in hospitals. Such filters are very effective at trapping microscopic particles such as bacteria and viruses.”

I tell them I have a special condition that requires that I constantly eat peanuts or I will die.

As you said, it is your responsibility, the only argument here is how far your cautions extend to airline companies and their responsibilities.

Who else is waiting in the wings? Those who cannot abide potato chips? People devastated by pork rinds? Can’t take pistachios. Can’t be near ice cream? Those allergic to tofu?

We’d go a long way toward creating more open toilet time on airplanes simply by banning wheat, barley and rye products.

“Even before my kid was born I was fine giving up peanuts on planes seemed the human thing to do.”

For me its not really the peanuts. If I want them I buy a bag and put them in my carryon. Which displays the uselessness of forcing airplanes to stop providing them.

I’m allergic to heavy perfumes and stinky people. I’d sure appreciate if the airline would ban them.
