Call Congress and tell them keep the Buy American Provision in Stimulus package
Vanity | 2-4-09 | nyconse

Posted on 02/05/2009 5:21:01 AM PST by nyconse

I don't like the stimulus and would prefer it not pass...but since the GOP has added their own pork...it's going to pass. Please call Congress and the White House. Tell them if the BUY AMERICAN amendment is stripped...do not vote for the stimulus bill. I would be just as happy if it did not pass, but if tax payer dollars are going to be spent, let's stimulate the American economy and provide jobs for America-not Europe,Japan and particularly not China. Stand up for America.

We are not betraying our neighbors, we are supporting our country. It is not our job to stimulate other countries...they can and should take care of their own...we need to do the same. As for the usual name calling... Giving our dollars to the Communist Chinese...now that’s advocating and support a communist state. As for Europe...when they start taking our steel...we can talk.

Free Trade is not conservative....you know zilch about history

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff...which Free Traders hate like the clap after a cheap hooker....was authored by two conservative Republicans and overwhelmingly supported by Republicans

The Bretton Woods deals, GATT, and the UN....were all started by Mr. New Deal, FDR...

Get your history and facts straight

Exports are down...you might want to consider...the American market for a profitable change.

Do you think that anyone knows what this is?

Unless they listen to Rush, most people have no clue and will have no clue until they are in the bread line.

I’ll be honest with you, when Rush brought it up, I had to look it up. We are doomed. Start stocking up.

If you are going to be raped, ask the rapist to sing "It had to be you" while being violated.

This is stupid. Call your Congressthing and tell him/her that you will work ceaselessly for their opponent if they vote for this suicide pact.

I agree, but if this monster goes through let’s at least give the few jobs that will emerge to Americans.

I think you should not betray your neighbors. Your city should enact a ban to stop you from buying any product not produced in your city. Give the jobs to your neighbors.

Tax any items not produced in your city to fund city government.

Well done ... it's a great, easy to understand analogy

You are far off base. The Buy America clause is an omamanation and bad for the country.

Exports drive our economy. Lose exports, tank the economy.

You post is typical of the protectionist drivel.

This is for you and many other Freepers who dwell in the darkness.

Export jobs………….. For a single export transaction or order

Export orders require very special knowledge and people attentive to the complexities of export documentation. For a company of any size with large export sales volume, there are separate export employees. In a company with smaller export volume there may be one or two employees possessing the ability and knowledge to perform multiple functions. There are many very small companies that have very successful export operations and thrive because of it. Exporting is far from being limited to large global companies.
There are several jobs directly involved in manufacturing the product. The number varies with the complexity of the product and requirements of the importing customer. These are the jobs most people know about.
Here are the rest……
At a minimum:.
There is an export salesman and sales manager
There is an export order processor and or export customer service rep.
There is at least one and maybe more export shipping coordinators.
There is an export documents clerk/coordinator
There is an export payment/letter of credit clerk
There may be export quality control specialists
There are IT jobs associated with building and maintaining company global networks and connections to outside communications global networks.
There are courier jobs required to transport export related documents both in and out of the country.
There is export packing and shipping clerical and dock jobs
There may be jobs in vendor organizations related to the special export packing needs including box and cardboard manufacturers and the special wood crates , pallets, and the blocking and bracing materials required for export containers.
There is a freight forwarder who arranges the voyage and inland transport.
There is a container dispatcher and administrative support including maintenance and support
There is an inbound container driver
There is an outbound container driver
There are local and financial center export jobs to deal with the complex letter of credit and other specialized trade finance payments
There is a marine insurance agent/clerk who provides the marine certification for the shipment
There are likely specialized export standards jobs in standard developing and auditing
There may be local inspectors working for the importer or the importer’s government that inspect the cargo before it is released for shipment
There may be consular service agent that provides the exporter services moving documents in and out of the importing consulate.
There may be Chamber of Commerce personnel responsible for document certification.
There is a massive port organization from document clerks to guards to equipment operators
There is a steamship line with people who work with the coordinating freight forwarder and who receive the container aboard the vessel for transport.
Excluding the jobs related purely to the manufacturing process, there are a minimum of 30 or so very specialized jobs required to ship one container load out of the country. Considering that there are thousands and thousands of container loads exported monthly, the number of jobs supporting the effort is massive.
To place this in perspective, although these ancillary jobs can and are be located all over, they are sometimes concentrated…… in a world trade center. There were estimates of 25,000 folks in the Twin Towers. Most were involved in trade and most of those were export related trade.

With all due respect:

1) Although I try to buy American when I can....As a free market believer I reserve the right to purchase products from whom ever I choose...

2) Congress can take this so-called stimulus package and it’s pork and shove it where the sun don’t shine.....

Kowtowing to Euroweenies is not the way to solve our domestic economic problems.

In any case the hypocritical EU countries (such as Spain) are busily promoting their own “buy here” policies even as the U.S. Congress dithers and spins about our economy and our fictional “global test”.

I’m telling them do not pass the bill and mentioning how extremely displeased I am that they added pork-both parties- and don’t even have the guts to make sure any jobs go to Americans. I am asking them to vote against the bill. We can all agree on that I think.

Perfect...if you can kill this bill, I’m all for it. I won’t get into the trade issue now. Most know where I stand anyway.

Buy American Act = Smoot-Hawley circa 1930.....

Exactly and I posted the exact same thing on another thread. This would kill what is left of economic activity. Willfully repeating history...
