Fat Head the movie

Have you seen the news stories about the obesity epidemic? Did you see Super Size Me? Then guess what? ... You've been fed a load of bologna.

Comedian (and former health writer) Tom Naughton replies to the blame-McDonald's crowd by losing weight on a fat-laden fast-food diet while demonstrating that nearly everything we've been told about obesity and healthy eating is wrong. Along with some delicious parody of Super Size Me Naughton serves up plenty of no-bologna facts that will stun most viewers, such as: The obesity "epidemic" has been wildly exaggerated by the CDC.

People the government classifies as "overweight" have longer lifespans than people classified as "normal weight." Having low cholesterol is unhealthy. Lowfat diets can lead to depression and type II diabetes. Saturated fat doesn't cause heart disease -- but sugars, starches and processed vegetable oils do.

“Have you seen the news stories about the obesity epidemic?”

No, my cheeks are so big now I have a permanent squint, so I can’t read the paper.

“Unlike Morgan Spurlock, I’m not afraid to let you see exactly what I ate on my fast-food diet. As you can see, I kept the carb count down by tossing the buns or muffins from about half of my meals, with an order of hash browns or fries here and there. I didn’t drink sugary soda at all – I don’t like the stuff, and haven’t since I was a teenager. By doing this, I was able to enjoy a Carb Options fudge bar or two on most nights and still keep my calories and carbohydrates within my target range.

This is more of a modified Zone diet than a true low-carb diet. Normally I limit my carbs even more than this, but I was aiming for fast-food meals I think most people would be willing to try. Some people just can’t bring themselves to give up starches completely.”

His food log page is interesting. Keep in mind what he says about chucking the hamburger buns. He seems to have mostly gone to McD’s, KFC and Boston Market. If you look at his website, he mainly blames bad carbs for our obesity problem (white bread, white rice, etc.).

I long for the day when the obesity epidemic baloney is as exposed as the global warming baloney.

Yes, being a fatso is bad, and yes, air pollution is bad. But there is no epidemic.

Someone told me once that having diabetes clogs your arteries up as fast as having high cholesterol.

You can say that again.

If someone dies of a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure, or if they go blind or have foot amputated, first ask: “did they have diabetes?”

I also was told once that if you take lipitor, and then quit taking it...it will never work for you again. If you start taking it again sometime later it won’t have any effect on you.

Does that sound like a scam or what? I wonder if they designed the drug to behave like that on purpose?

Are you telling me that you don’t believe the voice of Jean-Luc Picard?

From the perspective of someone born in the 50’s, yes we are a FAT nation. It seems to have skyrocketed in the last 10-15 years.
In my grade school days, one or two very obese kids was the average in the entire school. Now it appears that 3/4 of the kids (and their parents) could stand to loose 20-30 lbs.

I agree with that.

When I walk around town or go shopping, it’s far less common to see people who aren’t overweight.
