Senator McCain on "Fox and Friends" [wants to "sit down" with the Democrats] [Gang of 14 redux]
Fox via U.S. Senate ^ | 2009-01-30 | U.S. Senator John McCain

Posted on 01/30/2009 2:23:30 PM PST by rabscuttle385

FOX & friends with Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson, and Brian Kilmeade

Gretchen: Senator McCain, it's my understanding that you're working with other Senators now to try and craft some sort of a different package. What is that, and what are the chances that that will be successful?

John McCain: Well, we're working on a package, a group of us republican Senators, and we hope to reach out to democrats as well that would eliminate a lot of this unnecessary stuff. The things that really would have no impact on the economy. A lot of the things included in this bill in the house are policies that the democrats have tried unsuccessfully for years to implement that have nothing to do with stimulating the economy, and then there are other provisions that simply are a waste of money. We don't need to buy cars for the government. We don't need to have STD prevention programs. Many of the programs are excellent programs depending on your point of view about the role of government, but they don't have really anything to do with stimulating our economy, so we're looking at tax cuts, we're looking at also provisions that once the economy recovers, and it will, that we then should have a provision that after two quarters of economic growth, of real GDP growth, we've got to embark on spending cuts because we're amassing a huge deficit. Real tax cuts. Payroll tax cuts are something that would really help small people keep employees, so there's a whole lot of provisions. Spend some money on defense.

. . . . .

Gretchen: I’m interested in your take on Barack Obama’s calling out of rush Limbaugh during his first week in office. Was that a strategic thing he did, in other words, trying to say to more moderate republicans you better not listen to rush? What was the whole point of doing that, and do you agree with the fact that he did that?

John McCain: I don't know why he would do that. Mr. Limbaugh is a voice of a significant portion of our conservative movement in America. he has very wide viewing audience, he is entitled to his views, and he, as a lot of people that listen very carefully to him, so I don't know why the president would take him on, but he's part of the political landscape, and he plays a role.

. . . . .

Brian: Senator, finally, I’d like to ask you, the word is that Barack Obama in the white house feels as though they can target John McCain to get him to step on to the democratic bill, something no house member did in the stimulus package. Have you felt the pressure from the white house, the overtures, are you close to jumping over and saying all right, stimulus, I’m on board?

John McCain: A group of Senators have been sitting down, and we'll reach out to democrats as well, coming up with our own packages of tax cuts, spending restraint. Once the economy is restored, spending on projects that you can really have an impact on jobs. This whole thing is about jobs, job create as you know, and we'll be glad to sit down with the white house at any time. We’re in a national crisis. But so far there has not been, frankly, indications of that, and I -- it's very unfortunate. There’s still time to sit down together and try to work this out. That hasn't happened.

I would love for McCain to go sit down with them...on their side of the aisle...permanently.

What a douche.

It’s this kind of screwing the Republican base that cost McCain any chance at the Republican nomination in 2000 when Republicans had a better shot at winning the presidential election.

This is a bit of theatre.
Obama speaks the language of “bipartisanship”.
So McCain should too.

These talks will go nowhere.

The Republicans come up with an alternate wish list that will go nowhere, but it makes a point.

At least, thats how I hope things will go.

He wouldn’t do that — he’d be just another turd in a big bag.

Sen. McCain can sit down with Dems if he wants to. As a matter of fact, he can sit on their side of the aisle if he wants to. He is no Conservative.

McCain is still trying to appear relevant. He still hasn’t gotten the message that his time is past.

Once again the Media is deciding what the “Conservative” message will be and McCain is happy to read their cue cards.

In the mean time, the true conservatives are left without a voice.

don’t you know, it’s of course important the republicans get some shared credit for the wonders this stimulus bill will do.

Not much attention paid to Alice Rivlin. Bubba’s CBO director.

She stated that the stimulus package ought to be broken into two parts. One for stimulus and the rest in a normal budget request. She stated that there was much in this package that would not help the economy at this time.

Perhaps some sanity can be brought to bear and the grownups get serious.

Like it or not, McCain has some credibility on budget matters. He certainly knows an earmark when he sees one and this budget is primarily earmark heaven.
