Obama, allies move stimulus fight into high gear WASHINGTON (AFP) – After a failed "charm offensive," US President Barack Obama and his allies unleashed a hard-hitting campaign Thursday to break defiant Republicans' thus-far united opposition to his economic stimulus plan.

The strategy called for millions of labor union members to telephone Republicans from hard-hit states, coupled with an aggressive television advertising campaign targeting potentially vulnerable Republican senators.

The ad featured Obama's warnings about the economic crisis he inherited from George W. Bush and invited viewers in Maine, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Iowa to tell their senators "support the Obama plan for jobs not the failed policies of the past," according to the script.

"support the Obama plan for jobs not the failed policies of the past,"

At least you could make a case that the Bush $700 billion "stimulus" plan was targeted toward the toxic subprime mess. That said, any idiot who takes the time to see just what's in the Pelosi-Obey pork bill could see it is doomed to failure in terms of it's economic impact. It will do just the opposite -- prolong the recession and devalue the dollar by adding billions of debt.

It will stimulate votes for democrats, not the economy.

I agree. I have no faith that he will do the right thing on an immigration vote, but on this particular spending bill, I’d be shocked if McCain voted “Yay.” If he does, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong.

“coupled with an aggressive television advertising campaign targeting potentially vulnerable Republican senators.”

We just had an election. Hard to believe that anyone will care about the stimulus package in a couple years, especially since we’ll be spending trillions (trillions!) of dollars anyway.

My question is pretty simple. If everyone voted for “change” then why are the Democrats doing the EXACT same thing that they have been BLAMING on President Bush for 6 years - deficit spending?!?!?

Also, WTH isn’t the MSM pointing this out to the American public? And most importantly, why in the HE!! isn’t the American public aware of this? Why are they not kicking down some doors and asking the MSM these questions?

It is way too late for rhetoric! It is getting to be door busting time because the MSM is proving everyday that they in the tank for The One!

I didn’t realize the split was close enough to enable filibustering. Defections are important but I doubt they will be able to hold the line with the RINOs we have. Nevertheless, my real concern is that the Dems will agree to toss a few paltry bones to the Repubs and get the votes they need with the bill largely untouched.

Oh, I fully agree that it will be trumpeted by the Dems as a bipartisan victory, but at least the Repubs would be able to say, yes, a whole 2% voted for it.

I am quite certain McCain will vote against this bill.

He's already said he will "as currently written".

We shall see.

Sure that’s the media rooting section. No surprise there, but what is getting to be a scary pattern is that Obama mouths some platitudes and Reagan type words and does the opposite all the while claiming to be noble.

He’s very very scary. No one is holding him to account.
No one.

Unfortunately we will have to wait until his actions have results. So far everyone wants to give him the benefit of the doubt on his “inspiring words”. This is the first time, probably in his life, that he is responsible for taking action instead of just talking about it.

I think the number of voters who are asking themselves ‘Ahhh, what did we do?’ is growing exponentially right now.

No way. The media tells them "stimulus" bill; most of them (sheepish liberals) will believe it without questioning or or researching the specifics.

Support is down to 42%!

As much as I detest and distrust polls, maybe there is hope!! I think the dims deserve to wear this "PORKulus bill" like cement boots when they get thrown overboard in 2010. This PORKulus bill is FDR on steroids, and it will surely fail just like FDR prolonged the depression. If pubbies could retake the House in 2010, where all appropriations bills originate, the SPREADER could be checked for his LAST TWO YEARS.

I doubt it’s his Bible if he’s at all familiar with the ending. You may be thinking more along the lines of “Rules for Radicals”.
