Robbery suspect shot and killed by intended victim

A robbery suspect was shot six times and killed by his intended victim outside an East Atlanta Village bar Wednesday night, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight in the 1200 block of Glenwood Avenue in southeast Atlanta, about two miles from the scene of last week’s high-profile killing of a bar worker near Grant Park.

In the Wednesday incident, a man and woman had just left the Graveyard Tavern and were sitting inside their car waiting for the vehicle to warm up when a man approached with a gun and demanded money, Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes told WAGA-TV.

“At that time, the male inside the vehicle pulled his own weapon and shot [the] suspect six times,” Keyes said. The unidentified suspect died at the scene.

Police were treating it as a case of self-defense.

Last week, Grant Park bartender John Henderson was shot and killed during an armed robbery at Standard Food & Spirits on Memorial Drive. His death prompted area residents to voice concern about rising crime.

The theory being that if someone is being bad enough to rate shooting, they rate meeting their Maker for judgment

"He needed kill'n" is a good argument for self defense in some states. In other states, you're better off being the one who gets murdered.

Not to mention that you don't have someone giving a different point of view when you get to court.

Bingo.

A guy I went to Tech with lived across the street from Grant Park 20 years ago (which is not far from the events in this article, for those of you not from the area). I thought he was crazy. His only firearm was an old Mauser, and I don’t even think he had any ammo for it. He did have two large rough-haired cinnamon Chow Chows, though. They looked like miniature lions.

I knew someone as well in that timeframe. Not a nice place at all back then (sketchy now). His place was robbed numerous times.

But, it was affordable!

No thanks.

There’s now a poll at the link. It’s running well in our favor. Go over and vote. Current status:

Did the intended victim make the right call?
Always, you have to defend yourself 90.59% 741
Never, other people could have been hurt 0.73% 6
I don’t know. Depends on the circumstances 8.68% 71

Rising crime on Memorial Drive? Is it possible for it to get any worse?

I’m proud they’re treating it as self defense, but I’m also surprised considering it’s coming from Atlanta.

Absolutely. If the only option is to use deadly force, fire until the slide locks back and there is no more threat.

What people will do for a little money sometimes amazes me.

Officer: Why did you need to shoot him six times?

Would be victim: Because I ran out of bullets.

My neighbor, an X cop carried a 1911 type 45. I ask why he carried that as a personal weapon. He said; “Because they don’t make a 46.”

Because it would be a bummer if he shot me or my wife while he was laying on the ground, in a pissed off state, with a gun still in his hand.

Many people grossly underestimate what it takes to put a bad guy completely out of action. Bullets are not magic. Getting shot once (particularly by something under a .45) does not generally instantly make a bad guy fall down and stop trying to kill you. That's one reason why cops are trained to pump lots of rounds into the bad guy once the shooting starts.

It's about as far from us as you can get, philosophically speaking. The neighborhood isn't even Grant Park - it's further east, at Flat Shoals.

This is a strong contender for worst neighborhood, bar none, in the City of Atlanta. Definitely worse than Ben Hill or Cascade, worse than Stewart Avenue, probably worse than Bankhead Highway. I drive through there sometimes on I-20 and pray that I don't have car trouble . . . because I only have one extra magazine for my .45 and don't routinely carry a shotgun in the car.

I meant to shoot him more but he died before I could.

He meant to do a 180, but wound up accidentally doing a 360 . . . .

I have always said that JUST ONCE, I would like to hear somebody quoted in the news, "He was a bad, no-count boy, and he got what was coming to him."

And it happened -- it was a news story the other day about some burglar who was shot by a little old lady and died on her bedroom floor, and doggone if the news didn't quote somebody who said, "He was a bad boy, I TOLD him he shouldn't be running with that crowd and robbing and stealing."

And it was the deceased burglar's MOMMA!

I wish I'd saved it, not likely to see that again anytime soon. At least not his momma.

Yes, I looked at it on Google maps later, and you’re right, it’s a good bit further east.

I used to go to McKenney’s (large mechanical contractor) every now and then, some years ago. They were a few miles south of I-20 off of Moreland. Really, really dicey neighborhood, for sure.
